Puerto Rican Day Parade Questions

1. Elaine says "via condios" when leaving the car, what does that mean? 2. She also says that she went to Tuffs, her safety school. What is Tuffs? 3. Does the Puerto Rican Day Parade really bring NY to a halt?

I've never been to NY or know exactly what of college Tufts is but here is my guess or impression I got from the show.

2) Tuffs is more of a local or city type college that most graduating seniors from High School can get into if they have min grades.. Thus it's a "safety school choice" if you do not get accepted into a major university for any reason. Here in Southern California Pasadena City College is such a "safety school".

3) I have had on-line freinds from the NY area tell me that, yes, "normal" traffic flow (whatever that is in a crowded city like New York) is disrupted especially along 5th Avenue as a result of this parade. The same can be said in either a greater or less degree for the St Patrick's Day Parade & of coure the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade. In watching the Puerto Rican Day episode, the writers did not give the impression that there was massive disruption of traffic throughout a wide area. It seemed to me that the gang simply could not cross 5th avenue and got caught in the traffic jam along the parade route. Via Con Dios!

Vaya con Dios means Goodbye!

Nah, Tufts is no community college. It's very prestigious in New England and tuition is over $32k a year. Maybe Elaine just misused the phrase "safety school".

Yeah, my "safety school" was Broward Community College (BCC, "the Beece", Beer Can College, etc.) in Ft. Lauderdale. Luckily I didn't have to go that route.

since Elaine had a very high IQ ("The Cafe") and her father was author Alton Benes, she may have had Ivy League aspirations. Tufts would be a proper safety school for one planning on the Ivy League.

That sounds reasonable.

I guess I never really looked at Elaine as from a wealthy family.

But she did go to boarding school, I think. Didn't Jerry mention that in an episode? How she went to the finest boarding schools on the eastern seaboard? Or something like that.

Absolutely! The reality is worse than the show portrayed.

1. Elaine says "via condios" when leaving the car, what does that mean? "Vaya con Dios" means, literally, "Go with God" in Spanish. It's used as "goodbye" a lot. (It doesn't mean "Go with gods"; that's "Vaya con dioses.")

2. She also says that she went to Tuffs, her safety school. What is Tuffs? Tufts is a university in New York state. I don't know what their specialties are, if any...I'm guessing it's a liberal arts college. Most people's safety schools are.

3. Does the Puerto Rican Day Parade really bring NY to a halt? Nothing brings NYC to a halt. :-) But it does slow traffic considerably in that area.
