Pre-gifting

It recently occurred to me that in the "The Label Maker," writers Alec Berg and Jeff Schaffer could possibly have expounded on their concept of "re-gifting" (pawning off a gift you've received on someone else) and "de-gifting" (taking back a gift you've given). In the same category as these creepy (but comical) practices, there is also the reprehensible act of "pre-gifting." Definition: The giving of a gift you actually want for yourself, that you know will not be used or liked, with a sly, premeditated hope of politely re-acquiring it at a later date. Not that there's anything wrong with that. Well...maybe there is. :)

ie. The Outing-Kramer gives Jerry his gift early (in Jerry's mind; however Kramer believes it is Jerry's birthday already)

this gift was the two-line phone.

Giving a gift early is not pre-gifting (unless of course Kramer really wanted the phone for himself, which is not clearly stated). The phone was a piece of junk though, so we can assume Jerry probably gave it back to him anyway.

Actually, George's two tickets to "Guys and Dolls" was more of a 'pre-gift' than Kramer's phone, as George planned to go to the show with Jerry the whole time...

GEORGE: I got him a great gift. I got him two tickets to see "Guys and Dolls."

ELAINE: Hey, that is a good gift. Maybe he'll take me.

GEORGE: No, I'm gonna go with him.
