Fans praise Seinfeld for having no serious moments or moral lessons unlike other sitcoms, appreciating that it focuses purely on comedy without trying to teach life lessons.
something I noticed- in all other sitcoms there are at least SOME serious moments (I'm thinking specifically of Friends and Frasier) as opposed to Seinfeld, which has NONE!
What's cool is that this doesn't take anything away from the show, and it is still masterful.
It's one of the things I love about the show. Too many times a sit-com tries to teach you life lessons. Like when one of the Cosby kids gets caught with a beer and they have the big freedom vs parental control issue. Or when one of the Home Improvement kids steals something from a hardware store and they have to teach you how wrong it is to steal something.
Screw all that, morals and lessons are one of the easiest ways to turn me off. I don't watch a comedy to be taught a lesson, I'm only there for the laughs. Let LIFE teach me the lessons.
It's funny, I was thinking about an interview where Jerry said, talking
about the twisted plotlines, "We will NEVER do a 'Jerry's cousin comes
to visit' episode." And this weekend, I saw a Frasier episode where, lo
and behold, Frasier's cousin came to visit. I wouldn't have minded,
except that in light of Jerry's comment, it made the whole episode seem
bush league at best.

:) Yes But Damn, here's where I cant really exactly put my finger on this - I agree with everything you've said about these other sit coms. But the amazing thing is Seinfeld indirectly thru the humor says a lot about life. Says a lot about where people are at these days and what they really are after and how they sabotage getting it or how the culture screws them over, on and on, but it isnt in a "moral, teachy" way. I guess what I'm saying is that it's satirizing so much of what's wrong out there. That's why it's not a show about nothing. Instead of sermons about what you should be doing in life, it has humor that names the foibles of everyone in a hilarious way. It's art. It's complex. No easy one dimensional messages.

Yeah, that's the sort of twist that sends Seinfeld soaring over other
sitcoms.
I mean, name me another show that might consider using sex between
cousins to further a plot.
