Someone was complaining on the "ken Starr convisions" thread that responses to posts from our newsgroup were appearing on robotech newsgroup. The person was actually threatening us, to which someone responded "let the games begin". What the hell is going on? I noticed that if I press respond, I cannot tell where it's going to (as opposed to email where I can tell where the response is going). Thereare only 2 boxes to check, newsgroup and sender of post.
The original message was posted to three different newsgroups at the same time (The three groups were our newsgroup, Alt.tv.Road Rules Alt.tv.Robotech )and the message which was obviously off-topic to all the newsgroup posted to was most likely written by someone who is referred to as a Troll. Trolls usually do these "cross-postings" in the hope of starting "flame wars" between themselves and the newsgroup cross-posted to. They start insulting each other and the more messages that the "war "generates the more successful it is. Some Trolls are harmless but annoying (Do you remember Buffsgirly from a few months ago? She used to post to dozens of different newsgroups about anything such as "Who do you think make the best French fries ?ect...) other Trolls are a lot more harmful as they insult people just for the fun of it. The best approach is usually not to contribute to the thread and it should resolve from it's own volition (or momemtum:-) )
The Monica thread tho had it's good moments with fine dialog between our Ratboy and David H (a former troll) but the other thread about the newsgroup closure was a lot less interresting and was closer to a flame war. Hope this helped a bit
Yes, thanks for clarifying this Mo. I still wonder if there's some way to keep ytour personal response in your own newsgroup or if you automatically are posting to all the others by responding. cynth
When you reply the *TO:* address is listed in your mail program window - just delete the newsgroups you do not want to access. But as Mo says - it is best to ignore those cross posts.

Ah, must be another aol annoyance. This is not possible. IN fact, I just checked on those other threads and here's all they show us when we reply to post: Options: Post to newsgroup (alongside this on all those threads is alt.tv.seinfeld) Send via email (address of poster you're replying to - never more than one shows) Subject that's all the info we're given. There is NO way to tell if it is going more than one place. I checked all the Monica postings (not all, but many) and the stupid recent ones that were obviously not Seinfeld. No indication of any other addresses. So I think on aol it's not possible to even KNOW this. At least on 3.0 for Macs. Unless maybe the few posters who were posting from other places were not among the bunch I checked. In any case, there is no choice but to check the box marked newsgroup. Even if another newsgroup were named, there is no way to direct it only to one. YOu check the box or you don't. Do you have the facility to only address it to one newsgroup and not others that may be involved? Cynth
Cross-posting is simply that, a game. It works, because the "regulars" get up in arms about "off-topic" posts.
I've indulged my desire to "flame" on many an occasion when I found the "on-topic" posts to be simply hysterical. Read this group for instance. There is reason aplenty to "insult" posters with "flames". Many posts go into mind-numbing detail analyzing a particular phrase that Jerry, George, Elaine or Kramer my have uttered (or may not have... we aren't debating Dead Sea scroll translations here folks, they either said it or they didn't, watch you local UHF station, catch the re-run and move on) or speculating about the unscripted aspects of their lives (forgetting, of course, that they are characters). It's only natural someone would poke fun at some of the lunacy that is posted here (and elsewhere).
The best approach IS not to contribute, however, I've read a bunch of these posts (actually I haven't, imagine how pathetic that would be, but it adds more credence to my comments), which counsel passive resistance. Ironic, isn't it?
Due to the conditions inside most newsgroups, it takes only the smallest spark to get a "flame war" going.
Are you really concerned about newsgroup "threats"? Why would that be? How "harmful" could newsgroup insults really be? Could someone's self-esteem be so low that an anonymous post on a newsgroup could "harm" them (perhaps, but not likely).
Anyway, welcome to the world of internet newsgroups. Have fun. "Flame" if you like.
