Cereal on Jerry's shelf...why?

Dear All... I never have figured out why there are so many boxes of cereal on the shelf behind where Jerry usually stands in his kitchen. I believe they are boxes of cereal. Is there some reason for this? I didn't begin watching this series until about 95' and maybe I missed some significance here. Thanks. Jennifer

No, I didn't know he was obsessed with cereal in real life. Why is he and what is it about cereal that is so important to him? Hmm! And shoes?????? Whoa.... I hadn't noticed he had alot of shoes on the show. I will keep an eye out for that. The "Jerry" on the show does seem to be obsessed with cleanliness, clean teeth (which may be why there are posters nationwide in dental offices with him promoting clean teeth), and neat clothes. Is this also the "real" Jerry? Jennifer

To hear him tell it, he just enjoys cereal and milk better than any other breakfast. He's said he doesn't like heavy, greasy foods in general to start the day, so if he ever comes to your house don't serve him bacon and eggs for breakfast. I think the guy is also a creature of habit, who gets into a comfortable routine and sticks with it. He keeps the same friends he had as a teenager and college student, he eats at the same favor- ite places, buys the same brand of car (Porsche) time after time and even keeps a collection of them. He even makes fun of his own habits a lot on the air. His relation- ships with women are, of course, a notable exception... and he makes fun of himself for that too...

He's no Imelda Marcos...he just likes to have a few different pairs of casual shoes around, on the show and in real life...and he doesn't like them to be too grungy. The guy is a neat-freak, and makes fun of his own fastidiousness on the air quite often. A lot of Jerry's humor revolves around taking his own real-life quirks, exaggerating them, and using them as plot points to get him trapped in ridiculous (though plausible) and humorous situations.

About the only thing he isn't, that he portrays himself to be on the air, is shallow and selfish. He's quite the oppposite in real life.People who know him well have told me he's actually a very likable guy, who keeps in close touch with all the people who've been important to him over the years and never forgets his friends. (He even has remained friends with a lot of past girlfriends...most recently flying out to Dallas to headline a campaign fundraiser for an old girlfriend who was running for a seat on the county court.)

Yes, Jerry is like that in real life, as well. Regarding shoes: Have you ever seen the episode (not sure of the title) with the Mom and Pop store? And Kramer wants to keep them in business, so he takes all of Jerry's shoes to them. There were a LOT of shoes!

Supposedly they are also in alphabetical order, but I've seen some closeups where they appeared to be in random order, unless perhaps they also alphabetized by company, then cereal name. Say, for instance, General Mills' Quake would come before Post Toasties, or something like that. But maybe Post Toasties ARE made by General Mills. Or Quake would certainly come before Quaker Oatmeal.

Thanks for the reply! Hmm....what a detailed show. Maybe Quaker Oats comes before Post Toasties because of the O in oats are before P. A real stickler for organizing would have some sort of system like that. If Jerry is the same about his closet, I wonder if they ever showed his closet and how he keeps his clothes. Jennifer

For the record: Post Toasties and Post Honeycombs (which I've also seen on Jerry's shelf) are made by Kraft General Foods; Quake comes from Quaker Oats; General Mills is a different company that does NOT make the aforementioned brands; they do make Cheerios, Wheaties and numerous other cereals. Kellogg's is yet another company.

His closet is neat, but not immaculate.  In "The Virgin" Marla was going
to reorganize Jerry's closet space; put everything on hooks, but it
never happened.

Jerry likes cereal and eats a lot of it.

There is no alphabetical order. I looked closely in tonight's repeat and it starts with Post Honeycomb, and about 2/3 of the way down is Cheerios. It was an old episode, so maybe he has changed it around to be alphabetical since then, but I doubt it.
