What a mediocre finale to a mostly great show!!! I mean, the first half-hour, though a bit more stilted than usual, was so promising. The revival of the "Jerry" pilot wasn't the most original of finale plotline ideas, but it was the best. The last hour of the finale could have completed the art-imitates-life (or vice versa?) scenario, with "Jerry" episodes being shot and the show becoming a hit. It would have been potentially hilarious to see other actors playing the Jerry, George, Kramer and Elaine characters, and to see the differences between "Jerry" and "Seinfeld." Then, for the ironic finale, the show is cancelled for some reason at the end.
But noooooooo!!!!! I tell ya, as soon as the plane nosedived, so did the show. For one thing, they shoulda kept the damn finale in New York, where the show belongs. And for another thing, tey shouldn't have tried to shoehorn every old character into the show as if their mere reappearance is enough to generate laughs. We saw enough old clips in the 45-minute "pre-game" special-- we don't need to see more in the actual finale!
I know "Seinfeld" is supposedly the show about nothing, but even keeping that in mind, the last five minutes of the finale was anti-climactic. A finale should have a sense of FINALITY, but this one just seemed to drift off. Maybe if they were thrown in prison for 20 years, there would have been that sense. But oh well. It wasn't all bad, but it was definitely not up to the standards that Larry David himself created for the show years ago.
