gem episodes

I've been watching Seinfeld for years, and have watched many episodes over and over again on tape. Yet every once in a while I catch an episode I have never seen before. Somehow the "yadda yadda yadda" episode eluded me. I must have seen every other episode a dozen times. So you can imagine how pleasently pleased I was to see such a classic episode last night for the first time! I know there was an episode or two this last season that I missed (i.e. where Kramer sets up the talk show set in his apartment) and I can't wait for the new season to arrive on syndication.

It's a great episode where all the different threads are interesting and funny. There is not one dull moment , the supporting cast is amazing and it's full of surprises. The best episodes always have great rhythm (almost like an up-tempo song) ,the lines are delivered very tightly and the subplots all interact seamlessly. Thats why I was especially pissed with the cuts yesterday, I replayed it again and its like listening to a song that you know by heart and the records starts to skip right over the beginning of the guitar solo. (for when I had a turntable that is) Seeing it for the first time yesterday meant that you only got 99% of the show and for most of us here... That's not enough.

Yeah like when it was shown as a rerun here in Australia they cut out the whole part where Tim Whatley is mad at Jerry for being an ant-dentite and says something like "Dentists have a higer suicide rate than any other profession" and Jerry says something like "Oh is that why it's so hard to get an appoitment?" I love that scene and they didn't even include it! It's a travesty against such a classic to butcher scenes like that.

You know they do it to add more time for commerials in syndication! Jerry doesn't care. He gets huge revenues from the syndication. More Porsches! He personally helped to choose the scenes to edit. You can understand why editing them for syndication wouldn't bother him if you remember that each episode when shot went well over a half hour, then it had to be edited down drastically for the first showing. Once John Hurley, "Peterman", was on a talk show describing a scene he was in that was originally shot but they had to cut it out. And not for syndication but just to fit it into the original half hour! So cutting another minute out does not bother the stars.

I still would rather see them unedited but we no longer have that luxury - only what was taped with foresight.

I miss the new episodes of the show very much. After seeing them all at least 3 times (except for the 9 episodes they stubbornly continue to omit from syndication every time they start over with episode 1), I have given up the habit and it truly is just an archive for me now for the future when I want to see them again; I discovered Larry Sanders and at least they are something new to get into. Offensive, shocking and strange maybe, more low key than Seinfeld, but a big ensemble cast of wackos, lots of outrageous plots, never insipid, derivative and boring like the prime time comedies nowadays! Plus Jerry made a guest appearance on one episode and so did a lot of other stars.

Which nine ? I' ve never seen "The Pony Remark" , "The Barber", "The Mango" among a few others while I've taped "The Red Dot" and "The Contest " a number of times.

I started taping them Jan. 12/98. Since that time, these have not been on:

3-12 The Red Dot 3-22 The Parking Space 4-3 The Pitch 4-4 The Ticket 4-5 The Wallet 4-6 The Watch 4-12 The Airport 5-1 The Mango 6-1 The Chaperone

Next week the Parking Space will be on, so I guess the others will eventually be one.

On May 25, they started showing them in order from the pilot episode, but after a short while the chronological order stopped. And some have been shown again after just a month or so, while the above were skipped.
