During the season when Jerry and George developed the show about nothing, the local TV critic was ranting and raving about how Seinfeld had gone downhill. I think the critic felt like the show had betrayed its own concept by focussing on a continuing storyline for more than a show or two. Also, I think the critic felt that the concept was very self-indulgent in making the audience look and laugh at the underlying premise behind Seinfeld.
I completely disagree with this critic. Although some of the episodes were less than perfect (what is, after all), that season was superb and included many of the truly great episodes of the series.
