The woman's religion was Latvian Orthodox! A rare one to be
found in NYC! It's even rare in Latvia as the majority of Latvians there
are Lutherans ( yes Protestant), followed very closely by Catholics and
only a smattering of Latvian Orthodox members exist! Of course, thanks to
the Soviet Occupation from 1940-1990 ( which encouraged Russian
immgration there) about half the population there is Russian in origin
<not> Latvian which means that ( of those who are religious) most of them
are Russian Orthodox! This puts the few Latvian Orthodox members in a bit
of a bind as there have been some very violent anti-Russian
demonstrations in Latvia since it re-gained its Independence( there have
been calls to expell all the Russians- even those who were born in
Latvia of Russian parents)! A sad aftermath to a fascinating place ( in
terms of history) !
I thought the episode was an interesting
look into a minority that never gets talked about!
