10/17 episode instant classic

after three of the worst episodes in seinfeld history, tonight's episode was probably one of the best ones ever. everything about it was hilarious, but the conclusion was probably the funniest moment in tv history. I was in the room with three other people and everyone was on the floor in tears. Ive been watching every seinfeld episode for the last five years, and tonight was one of those rare occurances where Seinfeld is so funny and ingeniuous that it surpasses any other show ever created. I think this one will have to go down in history with all the other classic episodes like the parking garage, the contest, shrinkage, etc. and the funny thing is, it comes after three episodes that have been a disgrace to Seinfeld.

I felt this episode was the worst so far this season. It was still funny, but it felt like it was written by a fan trying his best to get an episode sold. It just didn't feel right. The flow and the dialogue seemed a little off.

Of course I like Bizzaro and last weeks episode.

I will pardon your French, but isn't partir conjugated with etre? As in "Larry David est parti." Just thought I'd throw that out there. Any francophone Seinfeld fans out there, back me up on this one.

Josh - let's not get into a grammar war (French or English) - it is considered very bad form in newsgroups to comment on the writing instead of the points made.

I apologise, it was bad form. It's just that the part of me that wanted to actually make some use of the French I know reached up and throttled the rational part of me that said "No, that's bad." It won't happen again.

Really? Better than The Contest?? I've never seen The Contest, but I've heard so much about it, I've been dying to see it. If last night's episode was BETTER than The Contest, I think that I don't care so much about seeing it now.

Parts of last night were funny, but I wouldn't rate it as better than about half of the ones that I've seen on syndication. As others have said, the whole Elaine plot was tedious.

Nope, I wouldn't call it THE BEST by far.

Interestingly (to me) this episode was written by Jennifer Crittendon, who is known for being the least-liked writer for The Simpsons on their web sites and newsgroups.

This episode was actually written by Jennifer Crittenden, an ex(?)-writer for The Simpsons, whose work for that show is regularly disparaged on alt.tv.simpsons. Interesting that after showing such a lack of ability to pick up the mood and feel of The Simpsons, she was able to turn out what felt to me like a Seinfeld of earlier years.

It certainly did pick up in the second half (around the time George starting posing for Kramer - the shot where he was clawing at the camera was absolutely hilarious!) And the payoff in the end was great when they unveiled the photomat guy's portrait. I don't think too many people would question that. But how annoying was that whole doctor's chart subplot? What's with Elaine? She's turning into George. One thing I did like was the geographically-challenged Newman and Kramer - in the opening sequence: NEWMAN: Do we own the Bermuda Triangle? KRAMER: No, it's the British. NEWMAN: Lucky Krauts.

And Kramer when he's posing as the doctor and tells the nurse his clinic's in Belgium...the Netherlands.

IMHO, this episode had a great payoff, but it was quite a chore getting there.

I agree that the opening sequence was funny, but it would have been funnier if it wasn't such an obvious ripoff of an early scene in, of all things, "Dumb and Dumber":

Jim Carrey: [something to the effect of "we're going to Aspen"] Jeff Daniels: "Aspen? The French are assholes."

I also was not crazy about the medical chart subplot, but it did give us a chance to see Kramer's hilarious alter ego Dr. van Nostrand.

George as a beefcake model was very very funny.
