Doesn't Anyone Lock Their Doors?

I used to watch Seinfeld a lot, but haven't much at all this season. The show has gotten stagnant and predictable and I'm usually listening to Knicks games this time of the year anyhow, so....Anyway, I DID watch last night's episode (11/10) and REALLY noticed something that I don't recall paying all that much attention to before. THESE PEOPLE KEEP WALKING INTO EACH OTHER'S APARTMENTS. I mean, this takes place in New York City, right, and we're having open house? I don't think so! In real life, these people would be bound and gagged and their valuables carted out to a stolen U-Haul! I'm in New Haven and I have four locks on my door. I guess I'm too immersed in REALITY. I guess I stick to watching Homicide and NYPD Blue.

Come on, its not like their doors open up to the worst, crime-infested part of NYC. They live in a *security-building*. Its not that uncommon to leave doors unlocked when you are home in such an environment --- I live in LA and when I am home often leave my door wide open for ventilation. Furthermore, there are lots of occasions where we see Jerry unlock his door --- say most times someone buzzes up, he unlocks and cracks-open the door. I think you are blowing a very-small point way out of proportion.

Well ... yes, it's New York City, but an alternate-universe sort of NYC. Everything is a quarter-phase out of sync. Anyway, horsing with door locks on camera would interfere with the flow of the action. For the same reason, when a character on Cheers who was encumbered with luggage or carrying another character had to exit from the bar, at _that_very_moment_ someone would enter the door and hold it open so the first character could walk right out. That sort of thing is simply a technique for maintaining the pace of the action.

you know that area you know that it's amazingly violent. However, I do leave my door unlocked... in fact, if people knock on my door I am instantly concerned as to who it might be because my friends just walk on in. I've also been the one who locks all 5 bolts on my door, and it was during that time that I was thieved not once but twice. Me thinks: if someone wants to get in, they WILL!!!
