I don't think it was an error; she was just a little short of the old grey matter. The line "I love you Norman" ie. I have these feelings for you but don't even know your name - she hadn't had any in years, after all!!

It was an error, from an interview I once read with Jerry himself. The actress was not familiar with the show and flubbed her line, shouting out "I love you Norman", instead of "Newman". Jerry and some others thought it was funnier with her saying "Norman" than "Newman". I guess the irony of someone declaring their love for another person and getting his name wrong at the same time worked for them more then the intended joke of Newman getting a farm girl to fall for him for who he is.

I've heard this theory before, and I find it a little hard to believe. Do you recall the tone of the article? Is it possible that Jerry wsa kidding around with the interviewer?

How would it be possible for an american actress to not be aware of the main characters of what was at the time a top-rated show? Especially when she was auditioning for a part in it?

I think it's much more likely that it was written that way *as a joke*. (She's so dumb that she gets his name wrong). I always found this quite funny, but at the time that it aired it touched off the endless thread of "Is Newman's first name Norman?".

It's quite possible. Just because you and I are fans of the show doesn't mean that others are, even if they're in the biz. Look at all the celebrity interviews on talk shows--it's quite common for an actor to say something like, "I'd never seen a single episode of this show before I joined the cast." And remember, Newman wasn't even a main character. It's not like she referred to Seinfeld as "Joey". ;-)

Also, it's likely it may have just been a slip of the tongue. I once called a university professor "Rick" even though his name was "Rich". I had seen this guy every day for a couple years and had said his name a bazillion times, but it just came out wrong that one time. We both started laughing, and he responded, "Yes, JACK?"
