Can someone tell me the premise of the pilot episode? I saw an episode last night that I think was the pilot - it was about a lady friend of Jerry's coming to town to visit & whether she would stay with Jerry.
It was weird because Geogre & Jerry went to "Pete's Diner" instead of Monk's --- Elaine was not in the episode at all --- and Kramer knocked before entering. Also I hope someone can clarify this or not -- I thought I heard Jerry refer to Kramer as Kesller -- is that correct?

That's it. "Good News", she wants to stay at Jerry's, "Bad News", she's engaged. You can tell the pilot and a few early episodes because they didn't have the money for color coordination : )
I think Kesller was on the mail box from the person that lived there before. And Jerry assumed that was Kramer's name.
Well, that's the "correction" used in the backwards episode (The Betrayal) which shows Jerry meeting Kramer. But in the "Good News Bad News" pilot, Michael Richards' character was simply named Kessler, one of the many things which was later changed. Other changes including Jerry's apartment, "Kessler" never leaving the building, the diner, the diner waitress as a secondary character, the presence of Elaine, etc. etc. One other change I had never noticed before was pointed out by my roommate last night --in the pilot, Jerry often dresses sloppily (sweatpants + t-shirt), whereas George seems better-dressed.
As for the "Kessler" change, I heard that it may have involved Kenny Kramer in some way (perhaps indecision over allowing his name to be used?). I know we've talked about this before, but I don't recall what the definitive answer is on this one; anyone remember?

That seems to parallel the Jerry-George relationship. In GNBN, Jerry is less sure of himself than George is. (The confident dress better than the insecure: discuss.) Or it may just be that George had a good job at that point (Realtor) and it was laundry day for Jerry.

Yet another odd detail is the crazy dog that runs in, jumps on George, then runs into the bathroom for a drink of water. One more change made after GNBN if Kessler actually owned the dog, but it's not specified.

I noticed that too. George seemed to be the confident one, whereas Jerry was unable to figure out what that woman wanted from him without George's help. And good thing Kramer got to leave the apartment. They would have lost a great deal of comedy there!

What's also interesting is that in the early episodes (not in the pilot) Jason Alex. said he played George with a lot of Woody Allen in him and when you look for it you can see it but then he said as time went on and George developed he dropped the Woody Allen in George.
