Seinfeld's Moving

NBC has decided to move Seinfeld to Thursday Night at 9:30 EST in February for the Winter Sweeps period. While I think this is a pretty decent move (my 2 favorite comedies are now on back to back) I realy feel that this could hurt the show's ratings by confusing people trying to find the show. Of course in that time slot they don't have to compete with Home Improvement.

In my book Home Improvement is no competition. I used to like turning on Coach after Seinfeld though.

I enjoy both shows, and fortunately with the wonderful invention of VCRs, I can watch both.

I should have known Seinfeld would be moving to another night. I missed it all this past fall because I had a Wednesday class. I was just getting used to watching it again (since the term ended), so, wouldn't you know, they're moving Seinfeld to Thursday night (I've got class on Thursday night this term.) It's all my fault!

There's more to it than that. The schedule shuffling shows how weak NBC's overall line-up has sunk to after the highs of the first few Cosby years.

Along with Seinfeld's move is the decision to show Cheers twice, once at 8pm and once in its "normal" 9pm slot. Wings moves to 8:30 thereby excising the entire Thursday 8pm hour (and hopefully burying Out All Night forever). Combine this move with the fact that this Saturday they will be showing a double dose of Empty Nest and Nurses and we come to the conclusion that NBC has *nothing* to show to replace its turkeys. Mid-season replacements are due in February, but they'll still be doubling up Cheers.

While I don't mind Seinfeld receiving the strong lead-in from Cheers, I would've preferred they kept it at the top of the hour. The weakness of this move is further highlighted by the fact that they have now exiled Mad About You to the Saturday night graveyard, effective the 6th of February. They have now split up a "New York flavor" hour starring two NY comedians.

I think they would've done better to move Cheers and Wings up an hour, then put Seinfeld and Mad About You in the 9pm hour and sacrifice Saturday night. This way, they could even put Out All Night back in its original slot for the interim that they wait for a replacement.

Of course, Mad About You could surprise everyone, but I think NBC effectively killed it.

Yup. Nobody ever comes back alive from Saturday night line-up. Seinfeld people should feel good about the switch. Although moved one night closer to graveyard, they still have a very good shot of making it in a solid time-slot. It's the NEXT move that "Seinfeld" producers should worry about...

NBC is in BIG trouble! After the end of last season NBC decided to drop one of it's more popular shows-Golden Girls-because it did not want to spend the money that Disney/Touchstone was asking. Instead they wanted to focus their time, energy and money into their "premier" show-Cheers,(how much longer did they think that should would last?). They dropped several other shows too. Now that they are losing Cheers what is NBC going to promote as their "premier" show?

The only good thing NBC has going for them is Seinfield and Letterman. Perhaps the only way they can get people hooked on Seinfield is by sandwiching it in between Cheers. There will probably be a lot of that through the rest of the season.

BTW, in the bay area NBC primetime starts at 7:00 p.m, so I can watch Seinfield at 8:00 pm and Home Improvement on ABC at 9:00-it's a wonderful arrangement!!!

Hey - as a reader of both alt.fan.seinfeld and alt.fan.letterman, I just had a vision: sometime next season, when the Seinfeld show on Seinfeld is in production (we can assume, since they've said the show-within-a-show thread will be picked up again, that the show will be accepted by the NBC-within-NBC), Jerry will become dissastisfied with the time slot, and will begin negotiations with CBS...

NBC's stated goal in this shuffling is to build up Thursday and Saturday nights, which they previously dominated, for the February sweeps.

After the February sweeps, "A Different World" will be returning and replacing one of the two "Cheers".

I agree that they broke up the best sitcom hour on tv.

"Mad About You" has been renewed for a second season, but no telling where it will wind up. An interview with Paul Reiser was generally optimistic, but he could have been sticking to the company line. It was pointed out that "Empty Nest" and "Sisters" have a reasonable following then.
