show takes place in NYC or in LA

I still have the doubt as to whether the show takes place in Manhattan or in some set in LA. Can anyone tell me?

The show is obviously set in Manhattan, but is totally filmed in Hollywood. Some clips, lead-ins, (e.g. the outside of Monk's) are in Manhattan, but rarely do these scenes include the characters. Anyone have examples of character-scenes actually filmed IN Manhattan?? (The street scenes are part of the set in Hollywood)

I don't believe they ever filmed in New York. They talked about it for a while, but all outdoor filming was done in Los Angeles, either on location or an outdoor set. Indoor filming was obviously all done on indoor sets in L.A.

They've done a few but use body doubles instead of the actual actors. The only example I can think of right now is during "The Pilot" when Kramer had to run across the street to use the bathroom. That shot was of the NBC building really in NYC but if you look closely at the guy running across the street it clearly isn't Michael Richards........

I also believe that the only exterior shot that IS filmed in LA is the outside of Jerry's apartment (where you see his window and the white fire escape). That is a building in LA somewhere.
