Drake's Coffee Cake

OK I'm sure all of you remember the episode where the Drake's coffee cake played a major role in th plot? That was the one where Jerry had the hots fore the g in his building whose boyfriend was ths big fat slob who ended up in a coma (title?). Anyhoo, everyone seemed to have this fixation for something called a Drake's coffee cake. I had occassion to be in New York recently and lo and behold if I didn't go into a deli and SEE Drake's sitting on the shelf. Something akin to going to a church which owns a piece of John the Baptist's beard :>. I bought it and enjoyed it for the most part, but didn't really understand the fixation. Anyone else notice the Seinfeld characters having fascinations with things that are really no big deal?

Well yes, to a certain extent I guess the whole concept of the show is that we center our lives around things that seem unimportant to outsiders, but I was looking for specifics of what people thought were the most outrageous examples.

What do you mean? IMO, Art imiates Life (or whatever). How many people do you know that have a little fixation. As I've said before, my life, and the kind of people and problems I have to deal with, follow almost exactly as the show. The parents, the friends, the dates, the travel, etc, etc...

I have a certain fixation for using a certain kind/brand of pen. I like notebooks with folder pockets in the front cover, and I prefer Ethernet to 2400 baud modem hookups anyday. Are these little fixations? yes, they are. What's the big deal?

Perhaps, that since Seinfeld is such a ground breaking show (not many other shows concentrate on real life (ie 90210, MP, anything else on Fox :) ) the little fixation thing is a new concept, possiblily hard to understand in the beginning.

Well, not to belabor the obvious, but a lot of times the "little fixation" results in one of the anal retentives dropping a gorgeous girl or gal for no apparently good reason. The real humor of the show is that Kramer is the most normal character on it, and he's weird as hell.

I don't know if any of the characters in that show are normal in the sense that you're talking about. Yet their character profiles are rather normal if you think about it in a generic sense:

Jerry - the pretty successful guy who keeps conversations going, and who
        is very critical about little things.
George- the loser.  Went to college but can't find any stable work now.
Elaine- went through school and holds an normal office position.
Kramer- the guy who seems to know everyone and is always having good
        luck.

The funny thing is, all my friends fall into one of these categories, which I think is why this show is so appealing (because so many people can relate to the characters). It's also pretty inspiring in that the characters, while they differ so much from each other, still are friends after such a long time (Jerry & George especially), which is pretty rare nowadays...
