As I watched it I was a little disappointed. I did get some laughs as everybody packed their bags and walked out the door to go to the trial, and the little montage at the end when the various incidental characters were together (especially the Soup Nazi and Poppy!)
As I realized that the bulk of the show was going to be the trial I thought that was a good way to get all the characters in the episode, and the shots of the gallery were pretty funny.
No doubt the ending was a downer, but as I have thought of it since I really appreciate the way the show did not sell out, and to me it was a wonderfully subtle and oblique tweaking of it's critics and even fans'. (especailly the NG posters who delight in saying the show is terrible now, the finale sucked etc...)
I am reminded of the finale of St Elsewhere. When it was revelaled that the show only existed in the mind of Dr Westphal's son some people were upset. As if they didn't realize that the show was not real? Same thing with Seinfeld. A playful, yet dark ending that says more than it seems to at first.
