The Pier

Can anybody explain the significance of the The Pier. It keeps recurring in many episodes - I think it's where Jerry decides to get married, but I can't figure out why they return to the same place in the same way?

Yeah, this is a question that I have wondered about for ages. Are these pier scenes a reference to a movie scene or something?

The significance of the pier is that it represents a sort of crossroads. Both George and Jerry go there to ponder major life-changing decisions. It takes courage and faith to jump off of a pier, just as it takes courage and faith to make many of decisions such as marriage.

Then again,, sometimes a pier is just a pier....
