The Little Jerry

This episope wasn't tightly written? I think this was the best written episode since "The Marble Rye". In my book it was certainly one of the 30 best written episodes of Seinfeld.

Quoting what I read in another post <I can't take credit for this>, "Even the worst of Seinfeld is better than 95% of the rest of television." And this WAS a great episode.

If you're gonna be Jerry's accountant, no, it's not funny. If you're the average Seinfeld fan, it was funny.

Lame sight gag??? They showed the check on the screen for 2 seconds. I thought it was hilarious when Jerry tried to cover for himself by saying "the bank sent the wrong ones."

I dunno why. To read? To watch TV? Why should I care why? They looked funny. I think that's supposed to be the point.

The joke was in Jerry not needing money, but his parents sending it anyway. Get it? And what would have been so funny about the cops raiding the cock-fight?

Since one of the writers is Seinfeld himself, that's gonna be kind of hard to do. Aside from that anyway, I think you are in the minority here - I felt this last episode was among their best.

Well, well. More wacky hijinks from our favorite foursome. I can remember when the episodes were so tightly written and so believable that it seemed that we were peeking into someone's actual life.

Alas, the writers these last two seasons seem content to slap together episodes that consist of a few good jokes, a lot of lame gags, and lots of wacky, stupid, situations. and then they string them together with unsubtle set-ups in between.

For instance:

1) Why did Jerry bounce a forty dollar cheque in the first place?
   This is the same guy who bought his parents a Caddy, and he doesn't
   have more than $40 in his chequing account?  Lame premise to
   start with.

• Why the 'Clown' cheques? Just another lame sight-gag, as far as I can see.

• Why was Morty wearing those goofy frames? (See answer to #3)

4) Finally, what was the point of Jerry's parents sending $50?
   There wasn't even a joke there!  I kept expecting the cops
   to raid the cock-fight and catch Jerry waiving his fifty
   like some avid bettor, but nothing came of it.

Fire these writers, before they run the show completely into the ground! I can barely stand to watch anymore....

In answer to Brennell's challenge, I have read several scripts on the Internet, and some of them are as good, or better than the current TV episodes. One stand-out in particular is called 'The Line'. If you come across it, read it. It's very funny.

isn't supposed to really be like real life.  That's the point...the beauty

I have to disagree there, I think like he said, at first it was more based on real life events and thats how it got to be so popular ("The contest" and the "you faked with me" ep) But as time passes on they surely can throw in a goofy episode like that because its funny, and any Seinfeld fan will still watch it cause it makes them laugh.

I have a fundamental disagreement with your viewpoint. I have always loved the show because it seemed to me very much like real life (friends, dating, sex, parents, eating). There was the occassional bizarre occurance, like Kramer saving a severed pinky toe, but for the most part the premise of the plots could happen to anyone.

For the last two seasons the show seems to have coasted on the fact that we love the characters. The writers have been content to take those characters and throw them into idiotic situations, relying on sight-gags and wacky hijinks for laughs, instead of writing crisp, witty dialogue about everyday happenings.

I disagree. I think Seinfeld has picked up after the horrible start to the season (three stinkers in a row). It seems as long as Jerry Seinfeld is not the one doing the writing (leaving it to Spike, Tom, etc), the shows are doing better. Similarly, the editing from Skip Collector is getting tighter (meaning better). I'd say it's at a level now just a little below the average of last year.

Well, the $50 thing wasn't a big problem for me, but it WAS a small script problem. It made absolutely no sense as joke. Jerry's mom just should have said she was sending a cheque to help Jerry out. That would even have been funnier because then Jerry would freak out because he would have no idea how much money was coming. The amount was unnecessary and evened weakened the gag.

	As opposed to the 'wacky hi-jinks' of the cock fight, the check stuff
seems much closer to the 'show about nothing' approach of old.  I know
I, for one, have come close to bouncing checks for nothing more than the
simple reason that all of my money happened to be in my savings account
and I hadn't gotten around to doing anything about it.  I thought it was
pretty funny that Jerry would catch all of this greif for something that
could happen to anyone.
	Besides, the episode showed that Jerry does have money.  He offered an
extra $20, I believe, for the check to be taken down.

Whether this was the case or not, I thought it also rang true to real life in classic 'show about nothing' manner. I may not have ever ended up with clown checks, but I know I've ended uf feeling silly about other things. Who hasn't been given a sweater as a gift and felt silly wearing it, but forced to wear it because it was a gift. That kind of thing.

I don't care much either way on this one, but it seems to me like $50 is not going to help much either way in NYC. Last I read, cost of living there is like 212% of the average US city. Jerry's parents giving him $50 is like a get getting a 'shiny quarter' from a grandparent. I think that bit has been overdone, but on the other hand, it was funny to see Jerry go through it; I think it was just a part of the larger humor of him suffering so much just because his check bounced for whatever reason.

I think it was a setup for next week's episode. It supposedly is about Jerry's parents thinking he needs money. That's all.
