The Stand-In

Funny how you seem to watch some episodes in syndication almost constantly, and some hardly ever. "The Soul Mate" was on recently, and I've seen that one in syndication so much I could understudy any of the parts. On the other hand, I think I've seen "The Pilot" only once (both episodes). "The Stand-In" is another one like that. I saw it for only the second time ever last night, and I'm sorry to say it was one of the unfunniest episodes IMO. Odd, considering it's in season 5 which is widely regarded as being near the top of the quality season rankings.

Mickey wearing lifts in his shoes rankling the other little people stand-ins; Jerry doing stand-up routines trying (in vain) to cheer up a hospitalized friend; Elaine dating a guy who "pulled it out"; and George keeping a relationship alive just because the girlfriend has heard of his reputation for non-committment---All just OK ideas, although the George-dating-for-spite thing was good. It was a little disappointing for me though as the idea was classic George, but the story sort of lumbered along. The irony of her finally breaking up with him was OK, but it bailed George out, and George is funniest when he gets screwed.

I realize others may like this episode, but it didn't do it for me, especially considering it's place in one of the "peak" seasons.

I guess I'm just not as much of a critic as some of you. I love every episode just as much as the rest. "The Stand-In" actually has one of my favorite Geroge quotes, "If you can't say anything bad about a relationship, you shouldn't say anything at all."

I don't watch Seinfeld on the tele much anymore because I can't stand the commercials. I have ever episode in .avi format like most of us here do and I watch them constantly. Usually I will find some seinfled trivia on the internet and if I can't answer the question i'll watch the episode that the question was based on.

I am going to be one of the first people in line when the DVD set comes out. The video quality of the .avi files are mediocre at best. And yes, on some of them, entire scences are missing. I might even just delete all my .avi files and rip the dvds onto my hard drive because I have fallen in love with the ability to just double click on an episode and that's it. No switching out dvds and such mess.

That's why "Seinfeld" shows are so cherished. The storylines shift so fast that if one storyline bombs, another one quickly jumps in. The end result is what's most important. Did you laugh and have a good time looking back on it after the show was over? That's really the most important.

I didn't laugh as much as I usually would watching Seinfeld, but I laughed at a few things, which is more that I would have watching 99% of the rest of the shows on TV.

Is it just me or was the scene where Mickey has the monologue telling all of the other little people "they would've done the same thing" a parody of a Brando movie? On the Waterfront? I may be way off... but I am sure that it is a parody of a classic movie scene.
