Seinfeld= the best sitcom of all time??

You gotta agree with that. Freinds is a rip-off Married with Children is very perverted, and that's all that's funny about it/ Home Improvement episodes are extremely predictable. The Honeymooners is perhaps the closest to Seinfeld, but there where only 32 or 33 episodes, it didn't last Frasier needs help. can anyone think of a better sitcom?

My theory is that there are many sitcoms that are funny, but few that are truly original. The honeymooners could likely have been one(I don't really know much about it), but Seinfeld definitely is. You usually can determine this in a leaders/followers paradigm: Seinfeld aired as a new, original show, and then friends copied, and then came partners, buddys, and twenty other bad knockoffs. I think many of the sitcoms that people say are the best of all time spring to mind because they distinguish themselves from all the rest-they have original stories and intelligent, original humor. All in the Family, Get Smart, I Love Lucy, and several others fall under this category.

My favorite sitcom of all time is the Fresh Prince of Bel~Air. I don't think you could compare the two because their comedy is so different. I love Sienfeld too. It's my second favorite.

Yes, a great sitcom. But consider the kind of humour. These four are, each in his or her way, impaired. Example: George is not in control of his life; he is self-destructive. Since the show must go on, he arises from the dead for each episode. Kramer possesses the logic of a state mental hospital back ward patient. Elaine is uncontrollably promiscuous. Jerry, who has the means and worldy success to have different companions sticks with these three, presumably, out of a serious weakness rather than strength. He is a lord and his apartment is a territory open to his three subjects. Yet we laugh! Does "Seinfeld's" huge audience tell us something pathological about the audience?

I think you would have to add "All in the Family" as one of if not the best sitcom with honorable mentions going to the Mary Tyler Moore Show, Taxi, and Barney Miller.

I'm not "into" what is "best" or in the "top 10". But when it comes to deciding what truly makes me laugh, there have been very few shows that have hit that streak of originality. Sadly, there we are being bombarded with more and more utter garbage these days.

But, we still have Seinfeld, Simpson's, Kids in the Hall and This Hour Has 22 Minutes and Mr. Bean (although I haven't seen that for quite some time) that really pushes the envelope with originality and it's own unique flavour when it comes to making me laugh. But that's about it. All the others are regurgitated and yawn-worthy.

To claim that Seinfeld is more random than The Simpsons is flat out wrong. While I think Seinfeld may be funnier day in and day out, The Simpsons is the king of randomness.

Seinfeld IS one of the best if not the best sitcom ever. Taxi...I don't think so. I've seen alot of episodes and the humour is not as riske as Seinfeld. Maybe it was for the 70's but it does not compare to today's standard. All in the Family however, ranks up there with the best. The acting, like Seinfeld, is superb and the subject matter is as provactive today as it was when the series ran between 70-75. Barney Miller, I don't think so. But sitcoms are like music, it just a matter of taste, and it is very difficult to convince someone that your ear for music is better than theirs. All in all, all were excellent sitcoms (i have watched many episodes of both), but in my opinion I would rank Seinfeld and All in the Family as a tie (but would rather watch Seinfeld reruns!). Oscar

I'm surprised that no one ever mentions Happy Days when they talk about the best sit-coms of all time. I would agree with most of you that Seinfeld is the best ever, but Happy Days is a definate top 5. Any thoughts?

Seinfeld is funny and I never miss it ... but it doesn't play in this league.

Sorry- - -If all 10 of the shows you mentioned plus Seinfeld were all showing reruns at the same time and my VCR was on the fritz- - -there's NO DOUBT which of the 11 I would choose- - -definitely, without a doubt- - -SEINFELD!! I don't know about "Happy Days". I watched it alot when I was younger (I'm 24 now). I not sure what years it ran.

I just saw a rerun and my opinion of it was that it was pretty weeny. The Fonz was lecturing a kid on stealing and how it wasn't cool but he felt it wasn't cool to lecture in the first place. So he called Mr. Cunningham for help in lecturing by making the phone work by punching it. Though slightly funny I think no sitcom nowadays would ever keep a running gag like that going for so long.

The main theme of the episode was being "COOL". Personally don't think I'll be checking my TV guide for the next time they play "Happy Days".

Sorry, don't think it is in the same club as Seinfeld & All in the Family (but as an afterthought the acting of course was very good and I'm sure the continuity (and direction) was not too shabby considering that Ron Howard was on the set).

Any thoughts on WKRP in Cincinnati? THAT show makes me piss my pants sometimes.

As another afterthought, have you seen the chrome dome on Ron Howard lately. It looks like the guy hasn't aged at all but he passed out one night and someone took the razor to him.

Even more amazing was that Ron Howard's brother Clint played the role of Tobias Lehigh Nagy in The Trip. He was the guy who was arrested for trying to steal a car and shared the police car with Jerry and George. He also turned out to be the actual Smog Strangler. Clint had even less hair than Ronny (and is younger). I hadn't seen Clint Howard since the 60's.

Clint's in all of Ron's movies. At least he was in Far & Away and Apollo 13. It's hard to believe it's the same little boy who was in Gentle Ben, isn't it?

I think Tastes for Sitcom change every 5 years or so, for the 1990's Seinfeld is right up there, around 1985's "The COsby Show" was Hilarious, I still watch re-runs of "Good Times" .. Ha Ha that J.J. guy!! and I still remember watching "I dreamed of Genie" and "Bewitched" with Daddy :)

Sure, Seinfeld is a great show, but we cannot ignore the past Shows which had a strong impact on their years. I am only 23 , so I am pretty sure I have missed some great comedies from the 50's and 60's & watching re-runs might not be the same, since the humour is directly linked to the affairs and matters of those years.

Of course, 'The Best' is a subjective outlook. I think Seinfeld is a mold-breaking show. It has never followed a sit-com formula. That's what makes it so easy to watch. Shows that follow the formula get tired fast. Although there have been threads in this newsgroup that have suggested the show has lost some of its edge, it is still (IMHO) the quirkiest and freshest comedy on the air. I also have to agree that the Simpsons is a fine comedy. Of course it has the edge in that it's easier to be outlandish and bizarre when you can draw the action. Lucky me. Our local FOX station shows these 2 shows everyday back to back. Oh, it's couch potato heaven!!
