🙁 Disliked it

Thread discusses how one-shot and recurring characters often face harsh fates on the show, including disfigurement, serious injury, and death, comparing it to Star Trek's red shirt phenomenon.

the fact that darren was apparently given a long sentence got me to thinking how little respect is given to the one-shot characters. Let's see; Elaine's handsome boyfriend gets his face disfigured; the guy who looked like George is seriously burned requiring lengthy treatment; Susan is killed off. Tsk Tsk. (other examples?)

a crew member showed up in a red uniform he would be toast by the end of the show.

Hey THAT is interesting! I never noticed that and I have always been an orignal ST fan. I am going to have to watch for that when I see the old shows! Were the red uniforms usually worn by the lower ranked officers?

That's very true. It's always the ensigns that die. I don't really watch the old ST, but for TNG, it's true. My sister and I have a running joke about that. It goes something like this:

Captain: Ensign Expendable, go investigate that Super-Powerful Being that might kill one of the main characters. We don't want any famous people dying here. Ensign: OK Captain, right away. [Sound of burning flesh] Ensign: Aieeeeee! Super-Powerful Being: Interesting... Captain: Good thing we used an ensign, eh Number One?

I guess it's a little different reasoning involved with Seinfeld, but I see your point. :)

I thought of teh Star Trek thing instantly also - no one should ever be an ensign with a red shirt and go down to a planet where a danger is lurking. On teh same token, no one should ever date George, Jerry, Kramer or Elaine if they want to be seen again on the show. Jason

Yeah, now I think about it, usually the red shirted guys were usually some lower ranking officer who was usually the one who was eliminated! <G> Offhand, I don't remember any of the guest stars wearing red. Hmm...I was wondering if other than "Susan", if there had been any other boyfriend or girlfriend of the group who had been in a number of episodes. So far the only one I can remember (but I didn't see the ones the first 4 years) is "Putty" and he has been on 4 so far if we count the two he did in 1995. His character is sheduled to appear 5 more times this season so this is unusual that he will have lasted so long. On the other hand, I had read that Julia Dreyfuss would be appearing less this year...apparently due to the new baby. Maybe the "Putty" character is supposed to give her more time shooting when it is in her schedule where she doesn't have to interact with the other 3 regulars. CALN

The best hallowe'en costume I ever came up with was a "Dead Star Trek Extra." I had the shirt, phaser etc, and put this goopy stuff on my face that turned rubbery and bubbly. Then I painted it red and black - burn like. I thought it was funny anyway, though many of my non-trekkie friends didn't really get it.

Yeah, how about Baboo (or Babu?). They shipped his tush out of the country. Although he did vow revenge on Jerry when he returned back to Pakistan.

You guys mentioned Babu as one of the few charcters that appears and disappears and I thought of a few other ones: Poppy, Lloyd Braun, Banya.

What ever happened to Poppie? I think he went to a sanitorium for treatment of his, ummm, condition (remember the peed-on couch?) but what has happened since?

For that matter, what happened to Elaine's close-talking boyfriend (Judge Reinhold)? I don't remember them breaking up, but then I haven't seen him since the Schindler's List episodes.

Speaking of foreign countries and passports, what about poor Babu Bhatt? I keep expecting him to return and wreak a horrible vengence on Jerry someday.

Elaine's balding fiancee in "The Little Jerry" is arrested, Jerry's girlfriend in "The Pothole" has a toilet explode all over her, Elaine's boyfriend Brett in "The Checks" gets a concussion when Jerry hits him with an axe, and presumably dies (we hear the pulse machine flatline) when the doctor is distracted by "Witchy Woman," Russell Dalrymple drowns on a mission for Greenpeace (leaving behind an orphaned teenage daughter).

I've always thought of the show as this incredibly funny travelogue of four people leaving an army of wrecked lifes in their wake. No one is spared. Just about everyone who gets involved with anyone of the four gets screwed in the end. Poor Susan said it best, "I don't know how you all stand it." They even always end up screwing each other up!

I want to visit Bizarro Jerry again! Maybe he became "evil" for a while to counteract the "nice" Jerry last night.

His name was Tony, he wore his hat backwards, George had a non-sexual crush on him.
