In the October 16 show, Jerry was sitting in the diner with George after George was mixing his two favorite activities, "Sex and eating." Jerry called him, "Callicula" or something similar. I am fairly certain that was in reference to a Roman character around Julius Ceasar's time. However, I can't find reference to it because I am not certain how to spell it. Can anyone help?

Yes, remember the ruler, Caligula, the plotting, orgies, drinking of the old Rome? It was a popular show, shocking, everybody talked about it (at least in Europe where I lived at the time: it was number 1 show, many episodes)

I thought this would be a good time to tell a story of an adventurous lad, who along with 2 other chums, decided to go to the movies one night.
Well, this one ought to be good..."Caligula". What's that about Fatty? It's one o' those ancient Rome movies. Like "Spartacus". Hey, I like those kinda movies. maybe Kirk Douglas is in it. No, but SirLawrence Olivier is, so it's gotta be good let's go!
As we were waiting for the film to start, we noticed an unusually high concentration of men in the theatre, very few women, and no families. A very engaging albeit somewhat shoddy looking young fellow siiting near us said the movie was so good, this was his third time.
Well to make a long story short the movieWAS about ancient Rome, and has been regular fare at stag and bachelor parties we've had since then.

Callicula was a movie made by penthouse. I was notoriously known as the most expensive porn movie ever made. It stars Michael Mcdowell, Sir John Guildgood and Peter O'Toole. It was a movie about the tyranical and evil emperor Calligula who tortured and raped the Roman Empire literally. BTW the three distinguished actors where not involved with the shooting of porn scenes. [yeah I bet ; )].

Caligula<sp> was a Roman emperer after Ceasar's time. As the Roman empire went downhill with their morals - their leaders became even more wacky. Caligula was best know for his interest in:
1) Killing Christians, of the Church which Peter started, in unusual ways - in addition to the usual lion thing. 2) Eating to excess, then throwing up and starting all over again (known today as binge and purge) 3) Having wild sex parties with both men and women.
Nero followed him - but by then Rome was doomed (thus they say Nero Fiddled while Rome burned).
So Caligula was the last guy to have all fun and no real problems - he was one sick puppy.
Thus the joke was pretty darn good IMHO.
FYI:
It was not until the 300's when Constantine<sp> became emperer of Rome, that reform occured. The Christian church was made the official religion of the Roman empire and the leader of the Christian Church was given a place (The Vatican) to be the central place of Christian Church.
