What I don't understand is, if you don't realize that these are real baseball players, what *are* you laughing at? This also goes for people who ask, "Is Yo Yo Ma a real cellist?" Why do these people watch the show if they don't get the jokes?
I know this may sound a little snotty, but really, I'm just confused.
(and yes, I realize that there are other things about the show that are funny... It's just that... Oh, never mind.)
can anyone tell me if hank bower (bauer), cleve boyer, and joe pepitone are real ex-baseball players, or did jerry/kramer make 'em up. and did those guys play for new york teams (mets, yanks, giants, dodgers???)

Yes, Hank Bauer, Clete Boyer, and Joe Pepitone were all players for the New York Yankees during the Mickey Mantle Era (50's). What I want to know is... Kramer says Mickey Mantle was his idol. But Joe Dimaggio was his idol when he was dunking. But we know Kramer was rooting for the Mets in the Keith Hernandez episode--he was upset Hernandez had made an error. So is he a Mets fan, a Yanks fan, a Brooklyn Dodgers fan, or one of those annoying people who switch allegiances when their team is poor (sorry to say, a New York thing). That would explain why he was a Yankee fan as a kid and now a Mets fan.
Oh just remembered...he was rooting for the Yanks during the baseball cap episode, as well. Whats going on here?!?!?!?

is there a law against being a fan of more than one team???? gee, i hope not, because then i would be next in line to get busted by the "seinfeld police". i like the cubs, the white sox, the athletics, and the red sox. i have many idols as well - Carlton Fisk, Ricky Henderson, and Ryne Sandberg, among others. am i in some kind of trouble now too??? please have mercy, i am a BASEBALL FAN. maybe kramer is too.

If you grew up in Chicago, I find this amazing. Having grown up as a White Sox fan, my greatest pleasure in life was torturing my friends who were Cub fans. With the Cubs being generally pathetic, I had plenty of opportunities to rub their faces in it. Of course, the White Sox were just as bad, so they didn't miss an opportunity to harrass me either. To this day, I have an abiding hatred for the Cubs.
I presume the situation is similar in other two-team towns like New York.

This true thruout the state of New York. I was very unusual in that I liked the Yankees and the Mets both. Most Yankee fans hated the Mets and vice versa. Where I came from, most of the town I lived in (Kingston) rooted for the Yankees, while the town 10 miles up the road (Saugerties) was for the Mets. The towns were also big rivals in local baseball (American Legion, Adult Amateur), and I once overheard a Kingstonian at a Kingston-Saugerties game comment on the fact that the PA announcer was giving Mets scores because everyone in Saugerties liked was a Mets fan: "That figures."
In a way, it's kind of silly in Baseball, since the Mets and Yankees have never played each other, being in different leagues. The same goes for the Cubs and Sox. (Neither the Cubs nor the Mets have been good enough to make the world series often enough to play their opposite number.) I suppose in New York that some of it may date back to the old Dodgers-Giants-Yankees days, when two of the teams were in the same pennant race and the third often met them in the Series.

Yeah, yeah, off the topic, but the Cubs and the White Sox did play each other. Think it was also the last time the Cubs went to the Series, 1906 (won too, the famous "Hitless Wonders"), though they may have also gone in 191x. So, for all practical purposes, they haven't played each other in any recent time.
As for myself, I'm a Dodger fan who roots against the Angels (except when they play the A's in which case I just stew :-). But, then they play each other every year.
