There were 3 "Curlies": (1) The original (and best) Curly Howard (Moe's brother), (2) Joe Besser, (3) Joe DiRita.
Curly Howard left the group for medical reasons (I believe he suffered a stroke). He was replaced by Shemp. By the time Shemp left (and was replaced by one of the Joes--I don't remember their order), the Stooges had lost much of their appeal. In my opinion, they had grown too old to get away with the child-like antics that made them famous. But the short films they made in their prime (especially those with Curly) will continue to entertain for generations to come.
