Jason Alexander on "Christine"

I don't know what you thought of Jason Alexander's two brief appearances as a doctor at the beginning and end of this week's "The New Adventures of Old Christine". It made me long for the return of George and Elaine. "Seinfeld"'s good scripting made such a big difference. Despite Jason's and Julia's obvious talent, in "Christine" the humour was forced. And I really didn't need the scene in the doctor's examining room when he palpated Christine's breasts. It's odd to use the word "subtle" in connection with "Seinfeld", but it treated the subject of sex with much more graceful humour than "Christine" does. For Julia's sake I hope the show continues despite "the curse of Seinfeld".- She's that good a comic actor.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, one good thing about Jason Alexander's guest shot was that it gave "Christine" a ratings boost:

"Jason Alexander joined fellow "Seinfeld" alum Julia Louis-Dreyfus on the season finale of "The New Adventures of Old Christine." The comedy, which like "Mother" has been considered on the fence for a series renewal, posted its highest rating in nearly two years.

The "Christine" lift helped CBS' Monday night leadership continue amid some week-to-week shifting. Winning the night among total viewers and the demo (12.7 million viewers, 4.4 preliminary adults 18 to 49 rating and an 11 share), CBS maintained its average from last week."

I had no idea this show was still on. I'm surprised that it is.

Julia, in her Christine role, really plays a character that is the opposite of Elaine. In Christine, she plays a character who lacks so much confidence that it can make you cringe. Of course Jason making a pop-in appearance as a doctor would also have to be considered playing the opposite of his George character. I think they really want to put their Seinfeld characters behind them which is in direct contrast to what their audience would like to see. And we all know what happens when you do the opposite of your instincts. You wind up with bizarre conversations about tuna swimming in the opposite direction of salmon. Now that is com-e-dy.
