Any Interest in Seinfeld ftp?

Hi All,

So I'm fairly new to the group, but I've posted three or four times now. I've been lurking in the group for longer though...

Anyway, I bought a capture card and I've been encoding Seinfeld episodes as of recent and I was thinking of setting up an ftp for downloads if there's any interest. The reason I say "if there's any interest" is because I've encoded these as VCD compliant mpegs, so they're fairly large...~480 meg each episode. So, 56k's just aren't going to cut it for downloading... :)

The mpeg's are prety good quality--at least the best I've been able to produce while still maintaing VCD compliance (so they'll play on my DVD player). (I tried SVCD format which is higher-res and higher bitrate, and fooled with a lot of the encode options, but the mpeg's were always "jerky" when there was a lot of motion in a scene. Anyway, so I went back to VCD and they look pretty good on my 'puter...but they look better burned to a vcd and played on my tv.

Anyway, are there any regulars on cable, dsl, etc. that would be interested? Are do you all already have encoded versions? :)

Maybe if you could split them into thre or four segments? Imagine d/ling 480Mb only to find it corrupted by a bad line or something!

I'm pretty sure quite a few people would be _very_ interested in a FTP or Gnutella possibility to download Seinfeld stuff.

Problem is only that this would be a major infringement on copyright, as publishing stuff on the internet can't be legally considered copying for "personal and private use".

I'm afraid that anyone setting up an FTP site for the purpose of distributing Seinfeld stuff would be slapped with a major law suit :-(

Copying for personal use, on the other hand, is quite legal according to international copyright treaties.

I think the big factor is how good the episodes are. I, for one, wouldn't mind downloading Seinfeld SVCD's, as long as there's a noticeable difference compared to reg. VCD quality.

Divx 4.0 is now out, so hopefully encoding will be better, too. (Beta version at the moment.)

DiVX is an all-around good codec because of its relatively high compression while still maintaining a fairly high picture quality. So, why don't I use it for Seinfeld? Well, first, if I'm going to go to the trouble of capturing and encoding these episodes, I'd like to be able to burn them on to a CD and play them on my DVD player every now and then. You can't do that with DiVX but can with standard VCD's or SVCD's (provided your DVD player supports them as most do). Second, SVCD's are generally higher qual ity than DiVX of comparable resolution--just much bigger. And I'm as concerned about the trade-off of size as quality and DVD playback. (I don't want to get into an argument here about quality, really I don't... :) So see www.vcdhelp.com or rec.video.desktop if you don't believe me... :)

On a side note, I was in a hurry when I posted the original message and don't know what I was thinking. The episodes are in *SVCD* format, 480x480 NTSC, not VCD format. I've been playing around with encoding so many different things I must've been thinking about something else.

Hey, yeah, that sounds like a good idea. And as for the whole legality of it, Password Protect your FTP with a disclaimer that all files kept in there are your personal property. The people downloading them just somehow got the password. Just an idea.

Yeah, I had planned to do something like that if I put them up--along with individual user accounts possibly IP restricted. I do realize the legal issues involved, as someone else pointed out. I just figured the risk would be minimal since my intentions were to help other Seinfeld fans out. That is, it certainly wouldn't be like I was selling them so I had hoped no one would turn me in to Paramount or Sony or whomever... :)

Anyway, I guess maybe it wasn't such a good idea. There doesn't seem to be that much interest due to the size of the files anyway, but I personally want high quality copies and not low-res, terrible copies like I've seen on other sites and people selling for that matter.
