Did they take the scenic route?

I don't understand this...They're in New York...and they take off in a plane to go to Paris...but they have trouble and have to land in bumsville, middle america?? Aren't they taking the LOOONG way around?

I'm pretty sure that Mass. would be considered the East Coast, rather than "middle america." Also, due to the rotation of the earth, planes flying to Europe often fly quite north and east along the way. Someone PLEASE correct me if I'm wrong about any aspect of this answer!

They land in Massachusetts which is North and East of New York City, and on the most typical air routes to continental Europe, which is, coincidentally, North and East of New York.

The great circle route from New York to Europe goes up the east coast of the US and Canada, goes across (or just south of) Greenland, and then cuts over Britain. Since they made an emergency landing in Massachusetts, it seems that that was the route they must have been taking.
