What's so funny about Jerk Store?

I had the same reaction to George's line as the people on the show. I didn't find it funny; the line doesn't work because, as Elaine said, there are no stores that sell jerks. Or something like that. Anyway, the show was above average, but Jerry's line about the zoo was much funnier to me.

But, the ocean has shrimp. No, the zoo doesn't let animals out and then call them either. But at least the zoo has animals. There is no store that sells jerks. Ok -- you found it funnier than I did.

The whole point was to show that George is not a particularly witty person, but he IS a compulsive, insecure one. (George is funny only when he doesn't intend to be.)

The funniest part about the whole incident is that, after going to all the trouble of thinking up the line and travelling to Akron to deliver it, the intended victim comes up with a good response to it --- something George never considered. George, being slow-witted, can't come up with a witty response, so he resorts to using Kramer's suggested line.

Of course Jerry's suggested line is funnier than George's --- Jerry's job on the show is that of a professional comedian. Also, Jerry Seinfeld co-writes the show; who do you think he'd give the best lines to? :-)

I think the whole point was that the line wasn't funny. We've all had the experience when we've been insulted and couldn't think of a good comeback until it was too late. It was this universal experience that was funny. Most of us don't go to the great lengths that George did to deliver the line that we thought of too late. That was what was funny about it.

The line is perfectly consistant with George's character and we just know that he will never let it alone and the whole thing will come crashing down on him. had he actually used Jerry's or Elaine's much funnier retorts the result would not have been nearly as funny.

Well, I think the point of that whole bit was that it was supposed to stupid...that was the irony of it, George thinking it was funny. But I enjoyed the episode anyway .

George just wanted to get back at him for the shrimp think but he only made a fool out of himself

That's the whole point. That line was George's idea of the perfect comeback. George is not known for his wit. You have to remember all the other goofy stuff he's come up with.
