Dolores?

I am also confused. Call me stupid, but what does *Dolores* rhyme with? And when George was trying to guess her name in Monk's, what does Aretha rhyme with?

Well, if we all agrsee Delores rhymes with clitoris but only if you mispronounce clitoris (and I've never heard it mispronounced that way, not that I've ever heard it pronounced at all), is it possible that the show's writers have another rhyme in mind? If not, and if clitoris really is never mispronounced in the way it has to be for the rhyme to work (even by children), then the writers goofed. Has anyone ever heard the mispronounciation?

I think I have heard this mispronounciation, but somehow I just can't buy the Delores-clitoris theory. Jerry is really retentive in a lot of areas and pronounciation is one of them--witness Svengali-Svenjali or Salman-Salmon. I can just hear him saying: "First of all, you idiot, it's CLIT-or-is, not clit-TORE-us..." I think that him coming up with the name Delores at the very end of the show was just a way for them to torture the viewers and keep us wondering and talking about this episode--a brilliant strategy since now "Seinfeld" is not just ABOUT minor irritations in everyday life, it's actually creating them.

I think that clitoris is mispronounced with the accent on the second syllable quite frequently - many people may not ever have the occasion to hear it pronounced at all and just assume that it has the second syllable accented, which is a natural thing to assume sometimes. I have had conversations to this effect with more than one person before. Therefore, I think that although most people agree that it is pronounced with the accent on the first syllable, it is mispronounced with enough frequency to make the fact that a stickler like Jerry is willing to knowingly "mispronounce" it to rhyme with "Delores" a way to show his desperation at not remembering her name and losing her. That's what I think.

I disagree. I was a theatre major, and if you break it down to the latin root, as we learned in voice and diction, the accent is on the second syllable. Or, ask your doctor. The only place I have ever heard it pronounced with the accent on the first syllable was in a porno movie.

I have always heard it pronounced as cliTORis, but I do believe that it can be pronounced BOTH ways and still be correct.

The American Heritage Dictionary, 1987:

clit-o-ris (clit'*r-is)

Where * is the upside down "e" like in "about". The accent is on the syllable.

Sorry, the word clitoris isn't from Latin. It's from the Greek _kleitoris_. My dictionary lists both pronunciations, with KILT-er-is first.

And I was so sure she was going to be Regina. (Pronounced Southern style, with a long I.)

Several people have said this... what does Virginia rhyme with? Not even close to vagina, if that's what you're thinking of... I'm sorry, but the bowels (excuse me, that's 'vowels') aren't even close.

I'm standing in the shower today, prolonging it to 20 bloody minutes because I can't figure out what Dolores rhymes with. Then it hits me even harder and more abruptly than it hit Jerry:

CLITORIS.

Aretha? I was thinking urethra, but, er, call me ignorant (I never took biology) but isn't urethra, and for that matter anything with the ur- prefix usually a part of the male anatomy? I'm probably wrong, though.

BTW, is Mulva a real name?

Yes, on my tape, Jerry says "Gipple." I can't say what the rest of the country heard... Of course, Gipple and Dipple being such common names for women these days, it's certainly easy to see the confusion.
