I am shocked that Suddenly Susan has ranked in second and third place in the past two weeks in the nelisen ratings. It is one of the worst sitcoms I have seen in years. Very low quality. I'm mostly dissapointed in NBC. But as long as it gets ratings it will continue to stink up television. The same goes for some other comedies. Look at Pearl on CBS. It's gotten the ratings, but it's not that funny. Cosby is so awkward I think it will remain in the top 20. Bill Cosby is allot different and I think people will somehow go for it. Read the Entertainment Weekly review in the Oct 1 issue.
The reason SS has such a high rating is that it has the top-rated show on TV, "Seinfeld," as a lead-in. Last week, SS had a 20 share while "Seinfeld" had a 32 share. Translation: SS LOST more than one-third of its lead-in audience from "Seinfeld."
If NBC holds true to form, they will build an audience for SS (there are LOTS of morons out there!) and then spin it to another night like they've done with "Frasier," "Mad About You," (good shows) etc...leaving the 9:30 slot available to launch yet another stinkeroo.
(Hey, NBC programming execs: I still think that the new series should be Anthony Michael Hall and Andrew McCarthy as a pair of goofy detective buddies. How come you're not returning my calls?!)
I for one have never seen a television show as poorly written and with such totally unbelievable characters as SS (and I'm old enough to remember My Mother the Car.) The digs at the Trekkies were pretty ugly and incredibly stupid when contrasted with what a pack of tedious characters make up the cast. And the jokes are so lame that they barely qualify as boring.
I do think that running a test pattern for a half hour between Seinfeld and ER would pull a pretty decent rating share for a while, at least.
There needs to be some sort of explanation as to whether we are supposed to like or identify with this Susan person, she seems shallow and vain and totally devoid of any personality or abilities. Maybe if she were rude and hateful in a funny way the show might be slightly entertaining. I work nights and so intend from now on just to skip it on the VCR timer.
And just to show that I'm not really all that mean I do like Caroline in the City, Brooke might have done well with a better supporting cast and writers. I also dug her episode of Tales From the Crypt in which she displayed some talent.
Wasn't she on some show like MAD-TV or something? I seem to recall her in a sketch about the new trend being the adoption of "crack babies". I feel like I can hear her voice going "Yup. Crraaaack babies. Black as night."
I think she was a guest on Seinfeld once. Wasn't she the "really funny" friend that Susan tried to set up with Jerry when he was on the road. She was supposed to bring back the barbecue sauce (or was it salad dressing) with the Charles Grodin look alike on the label, but she brought a different one she thought would taste better.
That's where I've seen that redheaded Suddenly Susan girl! Seinfeld! I shoulda known - Teri Hatcher, Courteney Cox, etc, etc...all of them guest starred on Seinfeld.
Pearl started out funny but it is getting very predictable. only 2 funny characters. Mr Rhodes is pretty good and Friends reeks now. Can't even watch it now.
Lois and Clark hasn't been good for 2 years now and the wedding episode was horrible. I still love 60 minutes though but what has happened to tv? Seinfeld was a shining light but the bulb is getting dim.

Yeah, it's funny that a lot of good shows (i.e. Twin Peaks) were taken off the air, and now we get shafted with trash like Third Rock, Suddenly Susan, Boston Common, and Eveybody Loves Ray Romano. My opinions of course.

Susan "suddenly being Susan" might be important to her, but why should her awakening be important to anyone else? Hey, life sucks for everyone.
No, I think Brooke is doing the best she can with what she's being handed, but I think she would have been better off joining a sitcom-in-progress like Seinfeld rather than arbitrarily being the center of a sitcom dedicated to -her-.
