I read somewhere that the show was shot in LA, but there are numerous shots of the gang out in NYC, how was this co-ordinated?

yes thats correct it was shot in LA...
I think they did do some stuff in NY however (mainly towards the end), but most of the time it was stand-ins... for example in the midler episode where kramer goes to get a popsical for bet, that is not actually kramer running around but a stand in... same thing with the episode where the cable guy chases kramer all over NY, again a stand in is used and you never see his face running through central park etc.... same thing again when kramer goes into the latvian church which is obviously in NY...
in fact I think the stand in for kramer may even be the guy who played kramer in those pilot episodes....

what about episodes where they are obviously standing in a famous store or street corner? Was this all faked? What was the reaosn for shooting it in LA? I though NY would add more authenticity to the show...

no I don't think it was all faked, I think they did shoot some bits in NY just some of it was never shot there and you can tell usually when watching an ep that has it because there is never any face shots just running or walking into a building with the camera positioned behind the actors....
it's funny as well in the first few years there was not much outdoor shot's in the ep's at all, except the ep when they visit LA and almost the entire ep is outside... :)
