Was George jewish?

I dont know if this has been discussed before, but does anyone know if George's character was Jewish? If you look in the last episode, while they were waiting for the jury to come up with a verdict, they showed the rabbi, jerry's parents and Frank listening to the rabbi pray. Also, in the episode where Georges parents were spending all their money, Frank bought Estelle a car. She said in that episode that she wouldnt drive a German car which hints that maybe she is Jewish. Anybody else have some insight?

George has been circumcised, but there are more non-Jewish people than Jewish that are circumcised.

I think it's left up to interpretation. After some browsing, They say , according to traditional belief , the Torah says that if your mother is Jewish, you are a Jew.

I guess my question is what about the offspring of formally converted Jews mothers that have no Jewish parents.

The name Cosanza is Italian, as George mentions in the episode with the Calzones.

The character is obviously Jewish because all three actors who play the Costanzas are Jewish and they play them Jewish. George is Larry David's alter ego and LD is Jewish. So much of the humor has a Jewish sensibility. Why would the paranoid humor in "The Limo" work if he was Italian? Mussolini, that fascist buddy of Adolf Hitler, was Italian! When Jason Alexander first started playing George he patterned him after Woody Allen.

Sorry to be so impatient but this topic pops up some times and people seem to have this very literal approach to the topic that irks me.

My theory, going back a number of years, is that Frank is Italian, and Estelle is Jewish. This covers the fact that the name is Italian (Paisano's reference, and the long-lost cousin in Tuscany) but George and family can still make Jewish-centric references as well. The name Costanza wasn't made up, it was taken from a college friend of Seinfeld and David; having the George character take the name also puts on certain anchors with the role, case in point, being Italian.

Right, I remember hearing that on A&E's Biography. I think Jerry's friend was named Mike Costanza and they interviewed him. I recall him saying that he was the inspiration behind the George character. But I still think he's more based on David. I'm no absolute authority but that's my sense and CYE certainly doesn't shy away from the assumption that George was based on LD. I can recall reading that, early in the show's development, Brandon Tartikoff or someone said the show was "too Jewish" for "flyover country". My suspicion is that they used the name Costanza to play that down a little - and I guess Jerry used that name as a tribute to an old friend, whom George was supposed to be and Mike Costanza really was.

Again, it's a comedy show and George is a fictional character so they could use any name they like but, again, I don't think George humming "If I Were A Rich Man" in the Limo would make a lot of comedic sense if he were Italian.

You got it...I know this because his cousin happens to be my aunt...and yes, her last name is Costanza...
