Since when is Elaine on the sponge and so dedicated to it? I remember when Jerry was dating the "virgin" and Elaine when on and on about how her diaphram fell out of her purse. Just an observation.

i posted the same observation earlier in this newsgroup.. i'm confused too.. yet another contradiction in the writing, i guess.. i've been thinking about it: maybe it's just that since elaine has "grown" (if you use the term loosely) a bit since then, she just changed her mind... it was a couple of years ago. i've got to review the wording of the spongeworthy episode.. did she imply that she had been using it for years? -jamie
Sorry, I didn't see your post. I don't know the exact wording either but from what I remember it sounded as though she had been "using it for years". All in all I think it was one of the least entertaining episodes.

Come on, fellas, it is not at all unusual for women to try out a number of different contraceptive methods during their (our) lifetimes. There was also mention in an early episode that Elaine was (or had recently been) on the Pill. It doesn't _have_ to be a "contradiction in the writing". (Thanks, Jamie, for at least considering the possibility.)

On a practical note, it's not unusual for women to wait awhile before jumping on the bandwagon of a new birth control method. The sponge took a while to catch on. Lots of women were just beginning to realize how much they liked it when it got taken off the market. I don't think it's that much of an inconsistency - I think the diaphragm (sp?) episode was at least two years ago - wasn't it?

You're correct; Earlier in the series, Elaine used diaphragms. But in the later episodes it becomes evident that she discovered the Today Sponge, and uses them exclusively now (or at least as long as her supply holds out!).
Incidentally, does anyone know if the Today Sponge has really gone off the market? It would be a shame--they work really well!
