Seinfeld Show seems Different Now (How about you?)

Is anyone else finding it difficult to watch Seinfeld now (post Kramer meltdown)? I dearly loved those shows and bought all the DVDs the day they came out (but not volme 7...yet).

For years Michael Richards had me in stitches laughing so hard at his quirkiess, physical comedy, and even simple facial expressions.

Now I'm finding it difficult to enjoy, and it really hurts because I loved this show so much. Even the comedy of the other characters doesn't work.

All in light of what has transpired with Michael Richards.

We've all heard the N-word in our lives, and while it's always a terrible thing to hear, it has been compounded a million times because it came from a source that I never expected to hear it from...not him.

Seinfeld will never be the same, it's just not funny anymore; "that" will always be there, behind every punch-line, behind all the happiness I used to enjoy.

And no amount of apologizing will ever set things straight.

Why are you allowing your feelings about Richard's outburst to affect your appreciation of Seinfeld ?

There has been too much misinformation and speculation attributed to this incident and I feel it's being blown way out of proportion. Plenty of "personalities" make stuffups and offensive comments all the time. Richard's just happened to be caught on video when he made his unfortunate remarks.

Why not ? he's human like all of us and chose to express his opinions (however ill-informed and rude) in a public manner. Granted, he appeared totally irrational in his outbursts yet what he actually said shouldn't really have any bearing on your appreciation for Seinfeld in general.

Michael Richards is *not* Kramer. Richard's stuffed up and apologised. Why are people getting their knickers in a twist and re-assessing their appreciation of Seinfeld because of what happened ?

It makes no sense. The show is over. It's not like Richard's can still be seen on the box in prime time.

In America, many many people actually believe TV actors ARE the person they portray. Soap opera stars who play evil characters are regularly harrassed in public by angry viewers.

There was a drama that aired in the U.S. called "The West Wing", about a fictitious U.S. President and his staff.

The actor playing the President- Martin Sheen- has been involved in a number of real-life run-ins with angry right wingers (sorry to be redundant). Sheen has since moved to Ireland.

As for Richards, most of the media calls him "Kramer"- never using his real name. So again, people believe his name is "Kramer". The real Kramer- Kenny Kramer- had to appear on news shows to actually explain to people that he is not Michael Richards.

Kenny Kramer is not desperate for attention, he has had a lucrative Seinfeld bus tour for years now. He is almost never in the media and doesn't need it. Seinfeld fans love his tour and are glad to pay the fee and buy souvenirs. I met him and went on the tour in 1999 and if you look at his website it is still going strong. He was bombarded with faxes, emails and phone calls from media about the Michael Richards incident and so gave his comments.

Not difficult but it does have a different feel when you see Kramer in the context of the show. Surely it will fade. Seinfeld the show is to thoroughly embedded into the culture.

The other day I caught a bit of the one where Kramer's date heckles Jerry and he decides to heckle her at her office. Richard's recent faux paux adds an ironic twist to watching it.

That is pathetic.

That is somewhat different. Fictional shows *do* have real-world messages. If you advance a cause people are against, they may feel like arguing with you. Don't tell me people don't advance causes through art!

Yeah - I kinda look at the show a little different now. Certainly it's not a very good thing to know that my favorite character on the show is a racist. But I would still rather have a friend who is a racist than some guy who pees in the shower. Phil

initially, i was looking at kramer in a different way and was bothered by it; but pretty quickly i found myself just enjoying the show like i always have.

I saw the video online, and it looks like he was trying to cope with a heckler and was trying to be shocking which would translate into being funny. But he isn't a stand-up comic and didn't think on his feet very well there. After all, this wasn't a Mel Gibson thing at all, Michael Richards was on stage trying to entertain a crowd as a stand-up comic. Michael Richards is a great actor as seen on Seinfeld, and without a script and the benefits of editing, he left himself unprepared on how to handle the thing. I have been to comedy clubs, and it is amazing how well stand-up comics are able to handle themselves no matter what anyone in the audience says or does, and is able to keep everyone entertained. One time, I sat up front, and the comic "picked" on me. I knew it was all part of the show, and after the show was over, on my way out he came over to thank me for allowing him to mess with me for his act. The problem here, is that Michael Richards isn't a real stand-up, and once he stepped into it, he couldn't get out of it, which is why he then walked off stage.

Seinfeld is a great show, and I wouldn't allow this to change your opinion of the show or Michael Richards.

No difference at all for me. I can separate between fiction and reality. I won't care if any of them turns out to be Donald O'Brien, the leader of the midwestern regional chapter of the Aryan Union. I love the show and I will keep watching it.

Who amongst us has not lashed out against some group, religion, nationality, breed of dog, etc. etc. when one member does something distasteful, which also might be taken as being stereotypical of that group? I certainly don't condone it, but all that he's done is sick in the true sense of the word. How much of Richards's other stuff have you seen? Did you see him on "Friday's"? He was hilarious! Did you see him in any of the movies he made before Seinfeld like "Transilvania 6-5000" and "Young Doctor's In Love"? He was very funny in those as well. Have you ever seen him do stand up? Despite the quality of his act now, I saw him in the 90's and he was great. When I heard that Seinfeld was getting a sitcom I was excited because I was a big Seinfeld fan. Then when I heard that Richards was going to be on it, I knew it would be great because I knew how funny Richards was.

BTW, Larry David was on "Fridays" with Michael Richards.
