As some of you know I live in Portugal and in the last episode in Portugal, George was speaking Portuguese.

I think that George learning Portuguese was just a takeoff on the movie "Phenomenon", where John Travolta plays a normal person who gets hit by lightning and becomes a genius. He teaches himself Portuguese in order to to help an accident victim (I think, it's been a while) who only speaks Portuguese.
George's abstinence was like the lightning that hit Travolta.
It turned him into a genius.
