what floor is apartment on??

tonight 4/18 Kramer runs into the apartment, grabs binoculars to view a girl on the street. When Kramer yells at Jerry to "come see this" Jerry says something like right, just what she needs is you watching from a tenth floor apartment.

Kramer is across the hall, right? So why did Jerry yell out the window and up: "Kramer, we've got a rooster to train" or something to that effect? Was Kramer up at Newman's? Or were they training on the roof? Wondering if I missed somethin'...

first of all, Newman lives on the same floor as Jerry does, in the other wing, so Kramer is never "up" at Newman's. Second, Jerry's room number is 5A, Kramer's is 5B, and Newman's is 5E (I have way too much spare time) so it would seem logical that they all live on the 5th floor. Why does everybody get to his room so fast after buzzing him? I don't know, maybe the buzzer is actually on the same floor, or maybe the elevator is just really fast.

On the same note, how do George and/or Elaine "pop-in" on Jerry without buzzing at all? They all of a sudden just show up. As I see it, two alternatives. First, and the least likely of the two, is that Kramer buzzes them up, but since Kramer is often in Jerry's apt at the same time this is unlikely. Second, they catch someone coming in/going out and just ride their coattails, so to speak. Both G and E come and go so often the whole building must be familiar with their faces by now.

Oh well, it's just something I've always wondered. :-)

The real reason is simply that it's a half hour show. If George took all day to get up the elevator the show would bore us silly.

The average time between the 'buzz up' and the character entering Jerry's apartment is about 15-20 seconds. You can't get to the 10th floor in 20 seconds. (Not that you can get to the 5th floor in 20 seconds, but it's a bit more plausible.)

I think the apt is on the 5th floor 'cause in the episode where Kramer is supposed to participate in the AIDS walk he comes into Jerry's apt panting and Jerry askes him why he's panting and Kramer says that he just walked up 5 floors.

I think Hollywood often takes liberties to save time. For instance the last time my office staff took a CPR course, I asked the instructor how long it would really take to strangle somebody to death. Normally it takes 4 minutes but on TV or the movies it usually takes about 20 seconds.

It is on the 5th floor! How else do you explain the number on the door? Have you ever seen them number by half floors? "Yeah, I live at 4 1/2 B." The explanation for Jerry saying to Kramer "some guy up on the 10th floor" is just exaggeration. Haven't you ever said, "I had to walk up a hundred flight of steps", "It's a million miles away", etc.? Come on fellas.....

Even Bizarro Jerry (I think his name was Kevin) lived in 5A!!

However, they later changed that, like they changed several things after the first few episodes. That same episode had a different color scheme in Jerry's apartment, there were doors on his kitchen cabinets (now they are open, showing boxes of cereal). Also, in the first episode, Kramer hadn't been out of the building in 10 years and there was no Elaine. So, I don't think we can take things from the first few episodes as permanent gospel. In an early episode shown in syndication on 3/5, the number on Jerry's door very clearly said 3A. In later episodes, he lives in 5A. In my personal opinion, the writers intend Jerry, Kramer, and Newman to live on the 5th floor, since they live in 5A, 5B, and 5E.

I live in downtown San Francisco. My Apt # is 408 but I'm not on the 408th floor. My friend lives in a Bld a few blocks away he is on the 5th floor but his # is 21. the person next to his Apt. is 12. Apt numbers don't mean anything. BTW I'm on the 6th floor.

I've now seen all but 8 or 9 episodes, and I must reconcile here. There were several fluctuations during the first several episodes...they were still going through the feeling-out process of a new show. Jerry, Kramer and Newman are in fact on the fifth floor.

I've never really noticed discrepancies in the floor, but I've always wondered this:

Why is it when Elaine buzzes up to the apartment, Jerry always goes over to the door, UNLOCKS IT, and leaves it ajar so Elaine can just walk right in? Meanwhile, Kramer just waltzes in whenever he wants, with no need to stop and unlock the door first. Hmmm...

Come to think of it, I do remember one episode when Kramer starts to breeze into the apartment and instead practically knocks himself out 'cuz the door is locked - "When did you start locking the door?!?!?!"

Just a wee bit inconsistent...
