Millenium just plain sucked

The idea of someone changing your position on his or her speed-dial based on your relationship with them had some promise, but they just didn't do enough. Say, Jerry's girlfriend changes the speed dial but forgets to change the labels. Jerry tries checking his answering machine, but when he pushes the button with his name on it, he gets Newman or Bania or Crazy Joe Davola or one of her ex-boyfriends. That would have been a lot funnier. Jerry tries to figure out why they are on her speed dial, where his number went, who else is on it, etc. They could have had Jerry competing with the guy in the #1 spot a la George's competition with Chelsea Noble's boyfriend.

Then they had some kind of weird "Graduate" thing with Jerry and his girlfriend's mother. It just went nowhere. They've done enough parodies to know how to do it right. I don't know what they were thinking when wrote it like that.

Am I the only one who kept asking himself why George didn't just simply QUIT?? Why did he have to get fired, why couldn't he have quit? I couldn't get over that, so I didn't laugh at anything he did to get fired.

Elaine's clothing store thing. Again, it had some promise but went nowhere. See the last time a vendor refused to serve Elaine (The Soup Nazi) for how it's done. Maybe if she had discovered the store uses child labor or she opened up her own store across the street...Maybe it would have worked. But they just didn't even try to do anything funny with it.

This question has popped up several times.... It's entirely possible that there is something in his contract to keep him from quitting and moving to a competitor's job offer (for more money). Therefore, he'd have to be fired to even be legally able to accept the job with the Mets. I can't remember if this came up in the converstation in the cafe, but it might have.

Major-league sports have "anti-tampering" rules that prohibit teams from even talking about possibly hiring personnel from other teams. However, this usually applies to key personnel like coaches or managers, not lower-echelon front-office employees like "assistants to traveling secretaries." (I assume this is still George's job since I've never heard of him being promoted, except for when he got his boss fired--I forget his name, the one who George thought looked like Sugar Ray Leonard.)

A better question is why George would be considered for the job as head of Mets' scouting. This is a critical position in any major-league organization, and there doesn't appear to be anything in George's background that would qualify him for such a lofty post. Maybe it's a writer's opinion about the lack of competence in the Mets' front-office that he would be offered this job.

I think the writers having the Mets want George to become the head of Mets' scouting is more a reflection of the writers not really caring about making their script plausible (which is constantly the case on the show) than anything else. They just don't consider it important to make something realistic when it gets in the way of what they consider a funny idea. It is, after all, the Seinfeld Universe, where unbelievable coincidences and unlikely events are as common as the dirty thoughts in a fundamentalist Christian's mind. :-)

I ran out of time, so my last post didn't get to....

The Millenium. First, let me set the record straight.

The next millenium and century begin on 1/1/2001. But, since a significant number of people (including Kramer and Newman) think the new millenium begins on 1/1/2000 and some people will celebrate simply because the year changes from 1999 to 2000, the bigger event takes place 1/1/2000, not 1/1/2001.

Newman booked his party for 1/1/2001, so his party will be a year "late."

Now to the story.

It just plain sucked. The idea of Kramer starting to prepare and storing things in Jerry's apartment is typical Kramer and it was somewhat amusing. But when we have Kramer and Newman planning competing parties, we start to have a real story line. But the way they wrote it, it went nowhere. If they had fought over caterers, bands, etc. (maybe even involve George by trying to reserve Yankee Stadium) then it would have started to go somewhere.

I don't pretend to be a great comedy writer, but I think the ideas I came up with in this and the previous post are ten times better than what we saw.

Bingo!! Like they really would have had Elaine open her own Mayan clothing store across the street!! Please. How could anyone say Elaine's story went nowhere?? How else were they supposed to wrap up Jerry's plot with someone calling Poison Control. if not for Elaine's run-in with the store owner, and her subsequent need to get back at her by having Kramer change the price tags, and when this fails, having Kramer remove the dessicants instead, and spilling one of the packets into the complementary salsa so the relative can eat it and become sick and require Poison Control?? The Millenium was one of the most tightly written episodes in a long while, and I think we should applaud the new writers instead of pining for dear old Larry David.
