Could it be that Jerry Seinfeld is having another joke on us? Or is he
actually getting a little goofy during his extended vacation?
Check this out...there's a report in the Star, one of our national
supermarket
tabloids, that claims Jerry is trying to put together a project in which HE
would star as Superman in a feature film. We know that Jerry has been a
Superman fan since childhood. We also know that there is a script out there for
a fifth full length Superman film, although it was originally projected to star
Nicolas Cage, and was later put on indefinite hold because of what Cage
believed were severe plot problems. That film is in that development hell
Hollywood calls "turnaround."
But Seinfeld replacing Cage and doing a new Superman flick doesn't sound
right, does it? Consider this; we know Jerry has said repeatedly (most recently
last month to Bob Costas on the Today show) that he does NOT want to do ANY
feature film work. The only exception would be a reunion film, TV or
theatrical, featuring the characters from the Seinfeld series. People are
reading way too much into that famous American Express commercial he did, along
with Patrick Warburton in a Superman costume. His future plans revolve around
reviving his standup act and perhaps, down the road, doing some variety/talk TV
out of New York. It would NOT be surprising, of course, if Jerry were to tell
that Superman film story to someone as a joke, or pull someone's chain with a
fanciful story leaked to the media to see what reaction he got. But one way or
another, don't you think he's laughing at the sight of that story in print?
