Jerry Seinfeld on Letterman 11-15-04

Um...did anyone at your house laugh at his cliched jokes? I like his delivery and timing but yeesh, were his jokes old. And by that I mean I've heard other comedians telling them. Not with the same wording, of course, but still.

Letterman's audience was generous. They laughed at the appropriate places and even gave his some applause at times. But his act didn't live up to the greeting they gave him. I only laughed once, during the "dead coming back to life" bit.

Dave said Jerry has a Thanksgiving special coming up. I wonder how many of last night's jokes will be repeated. In my opinion, Jerry should retire. He's lost his touch and his relevancy. He doesn't have the staying power of a Carlin or a Cosby. He's got the bucks, so he should be set for life. Please, Jerry...take a break.

Carlin was on Leno at the same time and that is what I watched. I switched over during commercials and found Jerry to be very stiff and forced in comparison.

He seems to be resting on his laurels, not pushing the envelope or creating new material. I snickered once. Either he phoned it in or he has lost it.

I think the special will be with the old cast, talking about the show. Hopefully there won't be any stand-up in it.

You can see him gradually build up his material over the course of a year in his Documentary "Comedian" he did this after retiring the old stuff after ending the series. I don't know how much of the material from the show I saw is still in his act.

It reminded me of a Cosby segment from about 5 years ago when he also appeared on Letterman and decided to do an original stand-up act. He started the bit slowly and it was almost painful to watch. It was like the whole audience could feel that he had lost his comic touch. But then he built and built and out of nowhere ended with a great punchline that brought the house down. Seinfeld is definitely at that level now where he's not just going up armed with funny jokes. He's a comedy veteran who in every way knows what he's doing.

Here's my Seinfeld theory... Seinfeld wrote 1 good routine. He turned that routine into a TV show and a book. That's it. For some odd reason, he couldn't come up with another good routine which makes me believe that maybe someone wrote up that routine in the first place. In addition to my Seinfeld theory, Larry David is the real genius behind the Seinfeld show. The moment he left, the quality of the show went down the drain. The ratings remained high because everything was in auto mode. David's show at HBO is pretty funny, I could say it's on par with Seinfeld's early season.... when they were actually funny. David have written other good scripts as well.

Seinfeld is no Carlin, Cosby or a Pryor. His superman and bubble gum routine is getting old. Check out his old appearances in the Tonight Show and Letterman, he just spouts out the same routine from his book as if they were just having a normal conversation.
