Julia Louis-Dreyfus's new show will last longer than Bob Patterson.

Fans discuss the failure of Bob Patterson and speculate whether Julia Louis-Dreyfus's new show will fare better, citing other failed star vehicles.

How can any network be stupid to take such a quality and innovative new show off the year as it did last fall??

The jokes were so good and so often that it was hard not to want to see an hour long show each week!!

****Just Kidding!!****

Has there ever been such an overhyped and pitifull show made and allowed to stay on the air just because it had a star name as its lead??

What do you think about "Elaines" new show premiering tomorrow night?? Do you think it will last more or less episodes than "Bob Patterson" did??

I was trying to restrain myself as I read your post, being new in the group and realizing some people might have elevated the Seinfeld cast to God's; and on the first read through I missed your "just kidding". Thank god for that.

I wanted so badly for Patterson to succeed, not as much as Michael Richard's show, but what a dog! I hope Dreyfus lasts longer and is better. Just saw a promo for it; for a promo pretty weak, but maybe that is a good sign since the promo's for all others were pretty good?

She'll last a season at least.

Yes, you can't read anything into NBC promos. I remember thinking how terrible Scrubs looked during last summer's hype, and that turned out to be a winner. I am holding out hope that Julia's show will be good, especially since it is done single camera, no audience or laugh-track. That's one step in the right direction IMO.

No laugh track OR audience? How is that going to work? I guess we just have to laugh, or not laugh, at home, I am being serious, is that the idea?

Yep. See: Grosse Pointe, Action, Malcolm, Bernie Mac, Scrubs, and other shows that stand on their own without an audience or laugh track! They also enjoy more natural lighting and audio quality since they are filmed like a movie.

It looks like "Leap of Faith" might fall into this category too, but no guarantees on the quality of the actual content of either of the new shows until we see a few.

Also see the Tick (may it rest in peace). Laugh tracks are annoying anyway. The audience doesn't need to be told when to laugh by canned dead people.

If only Red Dwarf had done without the laugh track.

Re: your comment about 'promo clips'.

I realized that movie/tv clips are designed to 'build' audiences, and are selected to make you want to see the whole thing. Often, I discovered, the scenes shown in the clips were the absolute highlights of the piece.

What I really really hated about Bob Patterson was the annoying banter between him and Robert Klein. It sounded so forced and staged, it looked like Klein was trying to do some sort of vaudeville comedy routine.

in one of the episodes they spent the first five minutes ruining a classic Abbott & Costello bit. it was bad.

Many "star vehicles" were major flops: Bette Geena Davis Show Chevy Chase Show (Fox built him a theater; I don't think the show lasted six weeks)

Hey, it worked on Russell Dalrymple, and he was a television exec! Apparently the show itself continues the hard sell:

from the San Francisco Chronicle: "The most notable thing about the pilot airing tonight is that it seems made to show off Louis-Dreyfus' breasts. While lovely, they're not inherently funny. And this is a sitcom, is it not?" - Tim Goodman

from the San Francisco Examiner: "It looks to me like 'Watching Ellie' stars Louis-Dreyfus' breasts. I mean, they're on prominent display throughout both episodes. They don't have any lines or anything, but that doesn't mean they don't steal some scenes. I'm not complaining. I'm sure a lot [of] people won't. They look great. But her boobs may be a little distracting to some viewers who may wonder, 'Hey, when did she get those?'" - Sonia Mansfield

According to the recent Entertainment Meekly piece (which I read after watching that horrid premiere last night), in the next "zanier second episode," Ellie "flashes her breasts at a tow truck driver who stands between her and the car containing the sheet music she needs to sing at her friend's wedding." Does this mean what some of us may think it means? Who knows, but NBC these days seems to obsess over bare male tushes, not bare female breasts.

Actually, conspicuously missing from last night's drek was any reference to urination. Maybe we'll be treated to some in another episode. And, after all, last night's drek did have a spontaneously overflowing toilet (and, ha-ha, Ellie says, "Crap!"). But the overflowing toilet was one that Ellie makes clear she hadn't even used. I guess the NBC writers are slipping. They should have had the toilet water dyed yellow. Oh, how much funnier the episode could have been. (Just please note my sarcasm and disgust.)

Remember when her hair was dragging through the toilet water on the floor and seemed to get pretty wet? Did anyone notice how quickly it dried? I have to say that if I dragged MY hair through toilet water like that I don't think it would dry as nice as hers did. <Notice; not top-posting>

ok...the breasts were *nice*

Not spectacular, but nice.

Had to wonder about some of the lighting in a few of the scenes where Julia's facial expression 'didn't look right'.

Don't really have a handle on it, but I think there was something askew.
