It's not uncommon to do such things on shows. On Frasier, they originally intended to show Maris (Niles' wife), but after a while they decided that as soon as they did that, the comments about her would not be as funny. Such things, often intended to be used for just a few episodes, often become running gags that they just have to stick to. You have to do something pretty spectacular to get away with revealing something, like they did when they revealed Kramer's first name - they chose an unusual name, and made a big deal out of it. Newman's name, in the other hand, had become one of those things they keep secret, even going so far as showing his card with only 'Newman' printed on it.
