Can anyone tell me what George was supposed to do with the Penkey file? What was his job at the company? And what kind of company was it? Did they leave it purposely vague or is this because I knopw nothing about the busines world? Any guesses? I was thining maybe a law firm, or accounting firm. Anyone have any knowledge of what he was doing?

I think the company was involved with highway rest stops. That's about the only thing I know of it.

Yes, when George was describing the interview to Jerry in the diner, he said they were in "rest stop supply". How that type of business would require a lot of people to sit around in offices in suits, working on things like the Penske file, I cannot fathom. Seems more likely they'd need a small office staff, a warehouse, a fleet of trucks, some drivers and maybe a dispatcher.

But George was at another company, of which Penske was a client. (Remember Penske tries to hire him away from that busines, telling him he was "Penske material.") Perhaps George was working for an advertising firm that was planning a campaign for Penske -- full-page ads in "Rest Stop Monthly" or something.

In short, it didn't matter WHAT he was doing or what kind of firm it was. This info would not have added to the comedy, so why waste time with it? They only have so many minutes per week, they aren't going to waste them on non-important material.

When George is first discussing his problem (does he have the job or not) in the coffee shop with Elaine & Jerry, Elaine ask him what kind of company it is. He says something like 'Rest-stop supplies'.

Well, the writers chose not to let us know what George was supposed to be doing with the Pensky File! You never know what the writers are going to come up with to make us laugh. Something as simple as a parody of JFK to something as complex as the Pensky File!

Sometimes I think the writers are doing a fabulous job...BUT, OF COURSE......

George has little knowledge of the business world, too. When he
started working for the Yankees, he told Jerry that he tries to look busy.
This episode reminds me of the "Cheers" episode in which Sam is
hired by a company just so he can be on the company baseball team. He
dresses up in a suit and taps his pencils all day long, just like George.

The joke was that George didn't even know he had gotten the job because during the interview the guy kept saying how much they thought alike.

This I also think was a little satire on all the family shows in the 50's and '60's. You rarely knew exactly what the father did, but he was always bringing home something like the Penskey file (only in those days they were all WASP names) to work on.

I saw that show and I know what you mean. It was never mentioned as to what type of company it was, and what he should be doing with the Pensky file. My guess is that information was not important to the story line and was therefore not mentioned. It could have been a marketing account. The main idea was that he lied his way into the company and was not supposed to be there, so naturally, he had nothing to do. The while situation was a "sham", but it still was very funny...

I don't think George himself ever had a clue what to do with the Penski file. After transferring its contents to an accordion-style folder, he was perfectly content reading the newspaper and taking naps the rest of the week.

Actually, I think the fact that the information (or, actually, the
lack of it) is crucial to the plot. The whole joke is that:
     a) George isn't sure he really has the job.
     b) If he has the job, it's because he "understands things",
          without having to be told.
     c) If he has the job, he's not sure what his job actually is.
     d) He can't ask, because (see b)
     e) He has the file, but has NO IDEA what it is, or what to do.
     f) He can't ask, because (see both a and b).
     g) he loses the job because he didn't "understand things".

So, to me anyway, the joke wouldn't have worked if I had known. The "mystery" was a focal point.

But that's just my opinion . . .
