I suppose the final episode was more disturbing than funny, but there's always been a dark streak in the show... this just totally exposed it. I think it was a good choice. If they went for "funny," it probably wouldn't be the funniest episode they ever did, so the show would end on a "dip."

Gawd, I thought it was really funny and ended on a great ironic note. It was also a good reply to critics who have been decrying the characters' self-absorption. Instead of refuting the moralists, the Seinfeld crew showed just how self-absorbed, neurotic, petty the characters are, and, in fact, almost all people are, at least some of the time.

I think there were very few WILLFUL acts of "criminal disinterest" on display, except for the mockery of the guy getting carjacked. When that was happening I was cringing in my seat... I was thinking, "They've NEVER been this mean!"
So really, the final episode wasn't fair to the characters. They really weren't as evil as they were being depicted (with the possible exception of George, and Elaine at her worst). Kramer, being the innocent primate that he is, REALLY got hosed, now that I think about it.
I think the show is just too complex to be neatly wrapped up. They chose to accentuate the dark side, just to have a coherent theme for the ending.
I have to add that like most of you, I was very disappointed in the clip-show aspect of the finale. The parade of witnesses went on a little long, and at some point that just becomes filler.
