Seinfeld will double its average ratings for the final hour-long episode.
Fans celebrate Seinfeld's dominant Nielsen ratings, with the new episode at #1 and a rerun at #2, making it the top-rated show in the country and securing NBC's dominance of the ratings that week.
I heard a juicy tidbit about the TV ratings from last Thursday, and I thought I'd share it with you.
The 9:00 episode (the new one) was the #1 rated show in the country on Thursday. The repeat they showed at 10:00 came in at #2, and the various other sitcoms that NBC sandwiched around Jerry finished #3 through #6.
That's right. A Seinfeld rerun beat out every other show except the first run Seinfeld, and NBC owned the top 6 spots on the chart.
Not very surprising, considering that ER was knocked off for that night. The real story is that Seinfeld's reign at #1 and #2 last week propelled it to #1 overall for the 1997-1998 season, pushing ER to #2 overall for the first time in a long time.

Agreed, Jerry is the most powerful force on network television today, however, I do not anticipate the post-Jerry era. The Thurs. night NBC lineup is always recorded at my house. It's frightening to consider what the alternatives that will be offered next fall. At least ER will still be showing, Knock on wood.
ER will be back, but it will be George Clooney's last year--which may or may not impact the series in quality and ratings. This does seem to be the time that several other enjoyable shows are also ending: Murphy Brown, Garry Shandling, Mad About You was on the wire before they got the big money, but it doesn't look like Helen Hunt will hang around after next year. Let's hope the new guard can come close to the level of these departing series--I have my doubts. alt showbiz gossip

Then Seinfeld is truly going out on top. Way to go. However, my local paper poured a little vinegar on this news by saying the numbers haven't gone up (over its yearly average) since Jerry announced his retirement. But did say they expect double its average on the final 1 hour episode.

True, but give Friends some credit. Assuming it came in 3rd or 4th, it didn't retain audience from seinfeld. i actually heard Just Shoot me beat out Friends two weeks ago, but that may not be true, or it may be in one key demographic or something. in any event, look for JSM to replace seinfeld, if not, Friends.
Alright, what will replace Seinfeld at 9:00 pm next fall? Dark horse is Just Shoot Me, 3rd Rock is almost out of the running, Frasier and Friends were the early favorites who lost momentum along the way, and the most likely choice is.........Mad About You because of Helen Hunt's Best Actress win at the Oscars and their recent signing of 1.25 million dollars. NBC will most likely exploit Hunt's rise to superstardom and put it in Seinfeld's old spot next fall. But the question is, how long will Mad About You stick around?
