surprised the show survived the first season at all.
kramer is much more funnier on drugs than a slow-witted moron.
elaine is much more sexier not wearing a long dress.
george is much more tolerable being an overweight, balding loser bouncing from job to job, relationship to relationship.

I'm one of the few people that watched the show from Day 1, but it took the show until season 5 to catch on with most other people. I'm glad it did. I was a fan of Jerry from the first time he was ever on The Tonight Show with Carson. The show was pure genious from the beginning. If you are surprised at anything, it should be that people watched season 8 and 9, but the writers left managed to squeeze in some great episodes in the final two mediocre years in the absence of Larry David.
I love the first season and as it went on.
That first episode is better than anything new coming out now.
I do like the way George went from a Woody Allen wannabe to his own character.

Agreed. For me, the first couple seasons are among my favorites. The show hasn't descended to wackiness yet, it's still very much dialogue-driven. The first couple seasons tend to remind me of Curb Your Enthusiasm a lot in a way, but that's a good thing.

I disagree. I thought the first season was very good. I do agree that Kramer was much better once he developed into a 'know it all' though. Overall though, the first season was at its purest as a 'show about nothing'.
Conversely, the last couple of seasons degenerated very quickly. Every character exaggerated their character traits, particularly George, who just become a screaming idiot. The storylines were garbage too.

It's really the only long-running show in which the finale was as bad the pilot. Most "great" sitcoms just do a slow slide (although M*A*S*H fell off a cliff after the 3rd season).
I remember seeing the premier show of MASH's 4th season. It was the same feeling I got watching the last movies 2 or 3 movies The Marx Bros. made.
