What was the meaning of "beard" in the episode "The Beard." Didn't Elaine refer to herself as a "beard" when she went on a date with a gayman? Please, someone explain this to me.

Haha! Those descriptions were hilarious ("frying pan"!) Does anyone remember all the descriptions used? Here are some snippets I recall:
Kramer: Tall doofus, face like a bird... Jerry: Big head, horse face, big teeth, flaring nostrils... George: Humpty Dumpty...
