There were only two nice highlights during the four hours: David Spade's hilarious impersonation of Michael J. Fox, and Larry Sanders winning best script.

I didn't get it either.  It just seemed to reinforce the fact that Jerry
picked the right time to end the show.  Once the "Academy" turns its
back on you, what's the point?  To just keep putting out great shows,
and then watching the trash that ends up receiving the awards?

I agree that it shouldn't bother them, but I think Jerry was very concerned that he had the award-givers in his corner. Even though Emmy awards seem to be a repetitious farce these days, winning them does carry a cachet of "quality" that was important to Jerry. I read a recent article in the LA Times on Kelsey Grammer. He said in so many words that unlike Jerry, if his show were being criticised--he would prove his critics wrong by trying harder, rather than quitting. Hmmm. alt showbiz gossip

Interesting use of the word "quitting". I don't EVEN want to get started, but if *my* show consistantly finished below the leader's in the ratings, I'd be extremely grateful when the leader decided to step down.

Still, when you play the same character for 15 years, you can fall in a
sort of rut and the lines seem to blur.  I think maybe "prove his
critics wrong" comment may have come from alter ego, Dr. Crane, not
actor Kelsey Grammer.
