GEORGE/JERRY HISTORICAL KNOWLEDGE

I've been reading all of the favorite lines/best George lines threads with interest. Just reading them in the cold, antiseptic environment of a post does not diminish in the least their comedic value...they're truly funny.

This got me thinking about another category of funny lines. Ever notice how George/Jerry (and to a lesser extent Kramer/Little Lainie) sometimes just pop out with a brief discussion of some esoteric historical figures (esoteric only in the sense that it's been a long time since high school and I don't always recall their significance)? I find these instances quite amusing in their own right due to the fact that George and Jerry (and the rest) seem like they should have no business engaging in a conversation about deep history ('deep' relative to their shallow existences, at any rate). One example I can think of off hand is when Jerry or George asked the other about his favorite explorer...the two names to come up were Vasco de Gama or Marco Polo or something along those lines. It's not even so much that they were zenith lines...just the fact that the incongrous subject matter was brought up at all is rather hilarious to me.

George and Jerry know a little about a lot of history, much as if they read their daily paper or watched the network news. As a for instance, take the Aquaman episode. Though rarely discussed in the mainstream media, they knew of Aquaman's existence. Then they discussed whether he could go on land or not. Someone who got their news strictly from mainstream sources would be confused, but one who went past the mainstream into alternative sources would have a complete dossier on Aquaman.

Aquaman is a superhero. This can't be considered historical knowledge. We all know Jerry and George have an extensive knowledge of superheroes.
