Jerry uses computers!!!

The long running debate about Jerry's non-used computer has officially ended with tonight's episode (1/7/94). Jerry was shown using his computer not once...but twice. Interestingly, the second time he was shown using it, he appeared to be doing the exact same thing as the first time. I could make out some sort of desktop type image in the background...maybe of the New York City skyline. He was using something which appeared to be windowed over it...but I could not make out what it could have been.

As for the monitor...he could use a better refresh rate.

I think it is now only a matter of time before we tune in to see that we who belong to this newsgroup are the butt of some quirky joke...not that there is anything wrong with that. Speaking of this particular Seinfeldism, one detail from that very show that adds to the possibility of Jerry having some sort of Usenet access is the fact that he has two phone lines (hey, I could hear everything you were saying....). In tonight's show I immediately ruled out the possibility of Jerry using a modem when Kramer came in to use Jerry's phone to call a phone sex service....until I remembered that he has two lines.

How do you know? So it was flickering. That wasn't due to a low refresh rate it was because the monitors refresh rate wasn't 60 Hz! It may have been higher, or it may have been lower...but you can't tell.

BTW, when did Jerry switch computers. He did have a Mac and it now looks like he had a clone?

It was a Mac, a Duo and Dock combo...

Jerry upgraded to a Duo (complete with dock) this season (hey, he can afford it), then in one of the latest shows it switched to a clone. Last night, the computer was back to the Mac which he was actually using.

It's kind of like going from the Klein to the Cannondale and back to the Klein hanging up on his wall.

OK, here's the real story as I understand it.

Jerry originally had a Macintosh Classic.

Recently he got a Macintosh PowerBook Duo and a Duo Dock that it sits in. The first time I saw it, the dock was turned sideways. Oops. I seem to recall something happening in one episode where the whole thing almost got pulled out the window (when the air conditioner fell out?).

Then, on that episode a week or two ago, he suddenly had what appeared to be an IBM PS/2! Rumor has it that the usual set dresser was away during the taping of that episode, and whoever filled in just grabbed any old computer and put it on the desk. To make up for this tragic :) mistake, they decided to have Jerry actually using his Mac the next week!

Now if only they'd install the VideoSync init so that the monitor won't appear to flicker on videotape...

Highly doubtful. When i worked on scripts for a TV series, they shot the episodes all out of sequence, depending on actors' availabilty etc.

So the answer to "What did Jerry do..." is "He had two phones". And since the two-line phone doesn't seem to have turned out too well, we see that he has returned to the "two phone" approach.

Since Jerry was speaking with BOTH George and the young reporter at the same time, it would seem that he DOES have two phone lines. Ah Haaaa!

Actually I think most upper class americans have at least two lines...and call waiting.

....But this isn't the issue. It was established on the show that Jerry has two lines. He was shown using both during a gag about a malfunctioning two line phone. And unlike most middle to upper class americans, Jerry is self employed, and works out of his apartment, thereby justifying a valid need for two phone lines.

And lastly, call waiting doesn't do squat when trying to use your modem and talk on the phone at the same time...which is how this thread began anyway.

Ah haaaa! How about Call Waiting? Plus, recall that the phone didn't work.

Besides, we all know Jerry uses computers. But do you think he has time for USENET news? No. The only reason I use USENET is to procrastinate be- tween assignments and to run up my supervisor's billing account.

If you have two lines, then you have two incomming and outgoing lines. If however they are both going through a phone that consolodates them, then I guess you probably wouldn't be able to use your computer, unless you had the second line hit your modem before the phone...and you didn't accidentally pick up that line while you were on the computer as well.

But this has little to do with my original post. The fact is, Jerry has two lines and it is technically possible to talk on one and use the computer with the other. This isn't call waiting or three way calling...these are two different phone lines.
